How much would you like to bet that if Pete Rose dies, the sentimental Hall of Fame will let him in?
Oh, I don't think they should. But there is quite a groundswell around him that didn't exist when Joe died. I have a bad feeling that they might put him in, crying in their beer.
Well, now, blueyeznj, you caught me up in the idiom. Yes, I mean when. A real gentleman would have let me off more lightly! :>)
I know the "legalities" and all. What I'm worried about is that, if tomorrow the jerk dies, these weepy old writers and the staid gentlemen at the Hall might divest Rose of his chains and put him in. The years that it's been and still the clamor to get him in is raised over and over. I hope he lives to 113 so I won't be around when he dies, however which way it goes.

I think you mean when Pete Rose dies. Unless I missed something, he's mortal!
I don't think he'll ever get inducted into the Hall. Of course, I could be wrong. But if forced to bet on it (Kind of ironic you want to bet on this issue, isn't it?), I'd go with the "never getting in" camp.

Rose's status is "permanently ineligible". His drawing breath makes no difference whatsoever.
And, do note, dying and being dead never has helped Jackson any.
The Hall's final powers -- basically Jane Forbes Clark and her immediate minions -- take their responsibilities with great probity. They're not prone to a lot of soft sentimentality, and their successors likely won't be, either. Nor Selig, and since his successor likely will be hand-picked, there won't be any change in position at the Commissioner's office, either, whenever he quits and/or expires.
Rose messed his bed, and it's up to him to unmess it. He's had numerous chances to fall on his sword, and never has.
In the extremely unlikely event that Rose's ban is overturned and he's still alive, there are ways he could become ballot eligible. This really is not the key issue at the moment, however.
So I wouldn't bet a hot nickel on Rose getting elected AD, but I'd gladly take the action against.

He wasn't banned for life. He was banned forever. The (your words) "sentimental Hall fo Fame voters" would never be able to vote him in because he is still permanently ineligible and can't appear on the ballot.
That is a sucker bet. You don't believe me ? Ask Pete what a sucker bet is. He will know.

I have heard a few writers over the years say that they wouldn't mind voting Rose in after he dies...however, as has been pointed out, he is permanently ineligible.
A lot of them might put him on their ballot anyway as a protest...not that it would matter.

He would have to be reinstated by the commissioner before he could appear on the ballot. The voters can't just write in anyone they want.

His girl friend has her entire Pete Rose autographed ball collection riding on it...... unless she gets her Playboy shoot, then she'll dump him for some younger more "eligible" former MLB player / mgr

How much would you like to lose? He'd be in the Veteran's Committee now and if he did get re-instated, they'd never let him in.
