Sprinkle baking soda on all the carpets, open the windows and doors. Allow the baking soda to sit on the carpet over night and vacuum well the next day. Baking soda is a great smell absorber as well as for cleaning. Maybe use some vinegar in small saucer dishes to absorb smells too. Sometimes I have used Cinnamon in a small saucepan and water and simmer it until the wonderful aroma wafts through the house. I've done this occasionally to freshen my house. you can also use cloves or something you like. Even vanilla but it can be expensive. Another helper is vanilla on a cotton ball and rub it onto the light bulbs on the lamps in your home. Until you get everything cleaned and painted the oder will linger on. From the sounds of how hard you are working you are nearly done. Best of Luck to you.

Bleach is not a good cleaner; it's just a disinfectant. It does nothing to remove dirt or odors. And it's a hazardous chemical to boot. It's best used in small doses and for killing germs or whitening laundry only.

There are a couple products on the market that should work. The first one I would try is Simple Green. It's a concentrated spray cleaner you can buy in automotive, hardware and discount stores. The cheapest place to buy it is Sam's Club where a gallon is less than $10. It's also non-toxic and biodegradable.

Simple Green is super concentrated so visit the site below for the proper ratios of water to concentrate for the cleaning task you're doing. The link for the .pdf file is towards the bottom of the page.

I even use Simple Green in my carpet shampoo machine. It leaves a nice clean scent and really cleans well. The biggest issue you might have is foaming in the recovery tank of the machine but a couple tablespoons of white vinegar in the tank takes care of that issue.

The other product is Odo Ban. Once again, it's a really, really concentrated product. It's made from plant extracts and removes odors with the enzymes in it. Walmart sells it premixed but once again, Sam's is the cheapest place to buy it. And it's around that $10 mark for a gallon. Do not use full strength! Follow the directions carefully. Odo ban is used by commerical cleaning companies for fire and water damage clean up. It's also great for removing pet and other odors from surfaces. However, you do have to apply the product and allow it to remain on the surface for awhile for the enzyme action to work. And use in good ventilation as it's a pretty strong smelling product! But it does work!

If these two don't solve the problem, you're only choice will be to remove the carpets, clean the sub floors and put new carpet down and paint. Be sure to clean every nook and cranny because odors get everywhere. Inside and outside cabinets, closets, baseboards, windows, ceilings, the whole thing.

Open the house up and air it out for several days. If safe to do so,leave it open both day and night. Sprinkle sodi bicarb quite liberally over the carpet and soft furnishings, it is a incredible deoderiser. So is white vinegar. Wipe out cupboards with the vinegar (about 1 cup/litre or pint), its' odour goes when the vinegar is dry. Burn incense, something like Sandalwood, in every room where the odour persists.

These hints will help get rid of the smell too if you decide to paint.

I hope there is a time in your life that you will wish you could have a grandmother/grandfather smell in your house! I wonder if your grandparents are asking each other, how will we ever get the smell of that grandchild out of our house?

I hope when they are gone you will miss them. I'm sure they love you very much.

How long have they been dead. Maybe it's time to bury them.
