Hi I'm a Jew Hanukkah first off lasts for eight days . The ancient story is the King Antiochus (the greek king) came and told the Jews to bow down to idols and Jews didn't want to do that they said we only have one G-d so Greeks had a massive army... some Jews studied torah (Jewish bible) in secret. So Judah gathered up his brothers to fight the Greeks they were called the Maccabees. In all the Maccabees defeat the Greeks ... The Greeks trash the temple where Jews prayed smashed all the oil jars slaughtered pigs (not kosher Jews not allowed to eat) in the temple. When the Maccabees came back they cleaned up temple, but they could not find any oil, but one tiny jar was found and the story goes that the oil lasted for eight days! and that is how hanukkah was started. There is a toy for little kids called a dreidel it has four letters on it. It looks like a top the letters are nun, shin, hay, and gimel, the game goes children or adults take turns spinning it whatever letter it lands on depends how much gelt you get (Chocolate covered coins) nun = you get no gelt, shin = you put in a piece of gelt, hay = you gelt half of the gelt in the pot, and Gimel= you get all the gelt! The letters stand for ness, gadol, hayai, sham which is hebrew for a great miracle happened there in Israel. Tradition food to eat on Hanukkah is Latkes (fryed photos not like french fries) and sofgonyot (jelly filled donuts) Hanukkah is celebrated in Kislev from the hebrew calender. You light candles in a menorah. I hope I helped you!

It is a Jewish holiday. It is the festival of lights. It began around the time of the Maccabees. They didn't have enough oil to light the menorah. They lit it anyway. It did not go out. It stayed lit for eight days. By that time oil arrived. You can find out more information at this website.

Um, Judaism.
Although the original story affected the Syrian-Greeks, who worshipped the Greek gods. The Hanukkah story celebrates how they tried to forcibly Hellenize Judah/Israel, but the Jews refused and defeated them.

I don't think any "RELIGION" is "AFFECTED" by hanukkah.
It's a Jewish holiday, and they CELEBRATE it.
But asking this does NOT constitute "doing research".
Try putting "Hanukkah" into your search engine and clicking on "search". THAT would be the beginnings of doing research.
