Can you get a green card if you adopt?

I am currently in Florida, but I am from England. I am adopting a child from somewhere in the USA. I have started the adoption process, and I am not adopting just for a Green Card, but could I get a Green Card from adoption?

You actually want an infant to be responsible in making you a Permanent Resident of this country?? How despicable! How are you currently living and adopting in America, evidently you must be on a Visa of some sort. Are you married to an American Adult? Then that's the person you should be looking to *fix* your papers for you....not an infant nor any child that you are looking to adopt from another country, in this case being America. Get in line for your Green Card, like anyone else has to do from a foreign country, rather than what you hope would be a short-cut in the Permanent Residency route...adoption of an American child.

No, you can't. (Nor from giving birth; your baby would be a citizen but your own status wouldn't change.) Parents can't derive their own immigration status from their children unless those children are now adult citizens who sponsor them as immigrants. Minor children can't confer immigration status.

In fact, I would be surprised if you managed to get approved to adopt unless you are ALREADY a citizen or legal permanent resident. It doesn't matter WHY you're adopting-- even if you aren't adopting specifically for the green card, you can't adopt while you're in danger of deportation or while you're on vacation or something. Adoption is a serious and permanent legal commitment, not something done lightly or in a rush.

Sort out your immigration stuff first. You need to have your own situation stable before you adopt, not look to adoption to stabilize the situation, because it will only do the opposite.

if you aren't adopting to get a green card, why would you ask this question. I hope one day you receive a green card, by becoming a legal resident of the US, but don't use your child to get one.

    No.
