Would you vote for an atheist for US president if the atheist was, otherwise, the best qualified?

Honestly.

But they're not a Richard Dawkins Atheist where religion is the problem and no god is the solution, they're more of a casual atheist, they have their views, and don't care for any others.

I would be more inclined to vote for the atheist, not because I am one, I would have confidence that he/she would not be a tool of the religious right and would likely not seek to invade people's privacy in the name of morality.

If he or she is,otherwise, the best qualified then it should be a no brainer. I would want the best qualified to do the job.

Absolutely. I know that many people would be pretty against it, but I don't really think it would cause a problem. And you're absolutely right about the President being a tool or religious right. I like the idea of someone who bases their opinions based on their true beliefs..I don't like it when people tell me that being gay is a sin because it's in the bible...my best friend is gay and he is possibly the nicest, quietest person I know.

I am more spiritual than religious..I believe in a higher being but I do not follow the bible..and I would really like to see someone in office who shared this belief. It would be nice to be able to relate to a politician without feeling that they are acting only on biblical morals.

Thanks for this question! It was thought provoking and fun to answer. I hope people won't be too harsh in their answers. Have a good day!

I would vote for the most qualified individual. If that is an atheist, so be it. Since the American government is a secular government anyway, the president's religion, or lack of one, is irrelevant.

You only have to go back a couple of years to see how well having an outwardly devout Christian president worked out.

faith has been a source of many wars and diverse situation on the earth. Our founding fathers tried to chop up faith from government by using prohibiting the Congress from business enterprise of a faith or from struggling with the loose workout of religion (First modification to the form). a individual's rules may be the factors by using which the presidential candidate is judged and desperate upon. remember, God sent judges upon the country of Israel which judges did not properly known YHWH through fact the only residing god yet worshiped idols fairly. That tells me, a minimum of, that God meant for people to have secular management at cases.

IF the person is the best qualified, then I would vote for them, no matter if they're a lesbian, Jewish, black, ambidextrous female.

I care about quality, not petty little traits that have no significance in law.

Well, religion itself would not play a large part in my choice of vote. I look at issues, and not just one issue, but several. All other things being equal, atheism would not be an issue. But if the atheist were liberal, I would have an extremely hard time voting for them.

Absolutely, I'd trust a well thought-out, educated atheist over a religious person who follows the commandments of their imaginary friend anytime.

Abe Lincoln was a secular humanist.

"When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad. That's my religion"

So they're, not an intelligent atheist, who enters into debate with Christians and churchmen like Dawkins, but one that will keep their mouth shut and be a puppet of the US Christian right?

  • 1 decade ago

Of course, Most atheists are secular humanists who seek to improve the human conditon. There is not greater purpose for a politician.

ok well i would probably vote for him if he was best for the job, but i very highly doubt he'd win because of all the super religious people out there
