Would you help someone in need? Why are Singaporeans so shy/reluctant at helping others?
Four men were caught on camera openly molesting a bikini-clad woman at Sentosa's countdown party. The incident took place on a stage in front of a crowd. Many onlookers were captured filming and taking photographs of the incident.
Yet no one helped her.
Several internet users highlighted this video which was posted on YouTube.com and said it occurred at the countdown beach party at Sentosa. Netizens are currently debating the incident. Some have expressed their anger towards those who did not help her but seemed content filming the incident.
Netizen Thinkoutloud said "Its becoming sick that people are more concerned on watching and video taping rather to stand up and help.
A simple shout to call for police or asking them to stop seem suddenly an impossible task.
What about you? Would you help someone in need? Why are Singaporeans so shy/reluctant at helping others?

Regardless of nationality, what women wear is of no call or excuse for any man to grope or molest a woman. Yes, I will say that again, some women may dress cheap and slutty like exposing much of their beautiful attractive skin, but still it is not a call or excuse for any man to infringe upon a women’s dignity by groping, molesting, or outraging her modesty in any fashion.
Beach parties are meant for a time to have fun where one can get out, get down, get wet, get wild and crazy like in horse-play, but there is a limit to that called boundaries just like most everything else we come across.
When things get out of hand generally there is a cry for help. Yes, when one becomes uncomfortably threaten this cry seemingly comes automatic, and most people know that a cry for help is the cue to respond; and most people will do so faster than you may think.
This incident apparently was nothing more than a young woman out looking for a cheap thrill where her presumptuous permissiveness in being fondled around had nearly embarked upon a bad out of control situation.
Cheap thrills in teasing and enticing, as well as fondling around, regardless how a person is dressed and, or whether or not they be under the influence of alcohol, is a very dangerous game to play for both women and men alike.
So, the bottom line to beach parties and, or any other for that matter is to have fun, but know the boundaries not to cross.
Yes, if there is a cry for help in answer to your question. Further, I have not seen where Singaporeans are shy or reluctant at helping others; if anything I have seen it is where Singaporeans are outreaching and helpful. There are many outstanding, very active community groups in Singapore that proves this point.

Regards the Sentosa's incident, I believed that Singaporeans have helped the poor victim, in silence, by captured filming and taking photographs of the incident.
This is to help identifying who's involved. If not so, why now there is an issued regards the incident. The victim if look through from what being film, she's enjoying and celebrating the New Year, Sentosa's countdown party instead of feeling herself being molested.
I don't think that this is call molest and there's no police report being made by the victim after the incident. But if it's real, than to the victim, be brave to lodge a police report as so the 4 molesters being punished by the authorities for what they've done.
But the 4 molesters, they should know the offense of what they've done either they're local nor foreigner.
This is a lesson for the victim as too much expose of herself and being too daring has end her up with a tragedy and bring shame on her. Here, we can't blame anybody and to blame to own self for what had happen.
Singaporeans are "Kiasu" people. They tend to be helpful only depends on certain occasion.

Help? I have watch the video a lot of times and this is what I think:
I see she has been enjoying herself and show a little resist in fact she was smiling. Only at the end she give a bigger reaction by running away.
So at how do people gonna help her when she herself the victim don't even show that she is a victim in the furst place? She is just showing that she is having fun. Even if you know that the guys is obvously taking advantage of the girl you can't do anything too becuase she did not show any sign that she need help before she ran away. Is like when you see 2 people "playing" wrestling, would you step up and separate them?
It would be a different case if the situation is that she seem helpless and is constantly shouting for help, pushing the guy away, very big reaction and showing a helpless and anxious face. If that's the case then the question of "why singaporean is so reluctant to help other?" can be brought up.
On top of that like what many have said this kind of places is suppose to be wild, if you choose to go there, how innocent can you be? Not only she did go to such event, but she went up to the podium and ALONE.
I as a guy will not even go up there alone, at least will get some friends to go tgt right. If she is there alone there are only 2 possibility. 1 is that she go there alone and why would a girl go to this place alone? anyway this is less llikely possible. 2 is that her friend do not wanna accompany her and if this is the case she should not even go up. If she do this just shows 1 thing which is she wanna get attention. So this is totally different case from an innocent girl get moslested in the bus.
Last but not least, I feel that she herself is sending a message to people like "hey come up and have fun with me" if not how would these guys be so daring to mostlest her openly on stage?

Ethical? Definitely not. To stand by and watch a girl getting groped very feverishly is just not right. As a male bystander, I would 'assume' that a sense of dignity in helping a girl in distress would have kicked in. As a female bystander, seeing another girl getting groped would naturally feel wrong. A good reason people did nothing was perhaps Singaporeans could not care less that night, and partying hard was the main driver. It might also explain the picture-taking and videoing.

This is rubbish. There were many reported local incidents of theft and robberies in which the victim clearly yelled out for help or put up a real struggle and almost immediately there was always someone there to help apprehend the culprit.
This Sentosa incident only proves one thing, we, Singaporeans, do not just rush in unwittingly, especially when the situation is of a very dubious nature.
Firstly, the victim was "advertising" his/her wares. No regular people were clad like that - mind you, it is a New Year's party and not a dress down foam/beach party.
Secondly, the so-called efforts to resist was very unconvincing. It all seemed like an act. For all we know the "victim" could have been horsing around with his/her friends.
Thirdly, this proves that we, Singaporeans, are quite open-minded. Why would we need to react just because it involves dark-skinned men and a fair complexioned person? After all the alleged victim could have been into this group-sex thing.
Lastly, this matter should have been closed when it was later revealed that the victim was actually a Thai tranny (lady-boy) who was out "advertising" some business.
I feel that we, Singaporeans, have been wrongly judged on this ridiculous non-incident. If there was an actual crime committed here, why no police follow up? After all, there is more than ample recorded evidence.

Firstly I think it is sick that people did not help the girl and instead filmed the incident. I guess this further proves the apathy of certain people in Singapore when faced with such incidents. I could understand that some Singaporeans do not want to "get themselves in trouble" and feel better off walking away instead of trying to help, but what? None of them helped her.
I'm quite disappointed to see that people mentioned that it's the girl's fault for being so scantily clad. I mean c'mon it's a party, and nothing changes the fact that those 4 men were at fault for doing things they know they shouldn't. It may be true that ppl at the scene are not all Singaporeans but there should be at least a few there.
Frankly, i do not know why Singaporeans won't just help others. It wouldn't hurt them , right? Besides it's not doing something bad or illegal, it's standing up for what they think it's right. Maybe the social value of what is right and wrong has since been twisted into something else. It is probable though that there are indeed people who want to help but just don't have the courage to because they think that they're alone and cannot stop the 4 people from doing their "thing".

I would not mind helping someone in need but please do not just quote out Singaporean and using this bikini-clad gal as an example. At the Sentosa countdown party beside Singaporean there are others foreigners as well. If the gal was molested she would have juz shouted for help, but from the video she did not! So why this ho-ha about the video?? Police should be around during this party but i assume they would presume that friends having crazy fun! Juz like the many onlookers who were filming and taking photographs they also assume the gal was having fun with the guys! So what no big deal!
We, SIngaporean have mutual respect for one another regardless whether is cultural differences or sexual differences. Only when a person ask for help then help will arrive if not is not our biz to say who is right and who is wrong!

It is not true that Singaporeans are shy/ reluctant to help others. It really depends on the situation etc.
Actually I am not very sure about what happened but I read about the girl being a transsexual and she was enjoying herself on the stage. Moreover the video didn't really showed what happened from the beginning to the end. It just showed this small portion whereby the men molest the girl. My point here is that I think a lot of people are jumping to conclusion without understanding the full context.
I don't know what really happened but I personally believe, or rather choose to believe, that it is not a molest case because these people were on stage. With so many people off stage witnessing a girl being molested, I believe that at least one kind soul would have stood forward to help (regardless of nationality). I also believe that Singaporeans are definitely not shy/ reluctant to help. This statement is a fallacy. In fact there are a lot of cases whereby Singaporeans stood forward to help those in need.
Also some people commented that the girl deserves it because of her wearing bikini at such a wild party. I feel that this comment is absolutely ridiculous. She has the right a wear a bikini at the beach and no matter what it is just wrong to molest anyone. My point is, assuming this is really a molest case, the girl cannot be blamed because she wore bikini. That her freedom and her right. Wearing bikini doesn't entitles others the right to molest the girl with bikini.

I am quite suspicious about the truth about the unwillingness of the girl. If anyone of you remember, there is a case whereby a girl was torture in a Junior College in Singapore, it was later found that it was a birthday bash given by her friends. I dunno whether this situation is the same as that whereby the four men are the girl's friend and they were having a high time after bounds of beer. Actually Singaporean are on the whole helpfully people, this can be seen on the amount of donations we give whenever there is disaster or mishap that happens around us. I remember going to one of the countdown party 2 years back at sentosa and something similar happen, there is this guy being courageous when forward to stop the act and in the end got beaten by the guys, claiming him to be kaypoh, these guy claim that they are the gals best friend and the gal also admit that they are having fun and ask this guy to loosen a bit and stop being a nerd. The gal still says that everyone is having fun at sentosa what for being so serious and tight up. If the victim say this to you do u still think that she needs help and really that innocent being molested by people or is she a willing party but after the act got regrets and decided to act the pity lady. I am a girl too but right i should pity the victim but in this era and year and location i don't think she is really that pitiful. If the location is now a a seculded location like some quite neighbourhood park or even botanic garden, i will say Singaporeans and Foreigners will lend their hand and help the pitiful lady.
