    Fun question.

I don't buy into the whole "first ballot" concept, so if I had a vote I would pick the people who I believed deserved it regardless of what year of eligibility they were in.

    Glavine - no brainer

    Maddux - no brainer

Mussina - I've waffled on his potential selection, but the more I look at his body of work, the more I think he should be elected.

    Thomas - no brainer

As for the rest, I can see Jeff Kent perhaps getting some significant support, but I wouldn't vote for him. Nobody else would get my vote!

I would vote for: Greg Maddux, Frank Thomas, Tom Glavine, Jeff Kent, Mike Mussina, Jim Edmonds, Luis Gonzalez, Moises Alou and Jose Vidro, in that order. (Vidro's merely a sentimental pick, and I could easily be persuaded against voting for Alou.)

I would say only Maddux and Glavine are definite first-balloters. Frank Thomas, Jeff Kent, Jim Edmonds and Mike Mussina are all maybes. Everyone else is either a long shot or has no chance.

Maddux, Glavine and Thomas, I'd definitely vote for on the first ballot. Kent, maybe so, I like Kent, and he won an MVP award in a year which was reasonably typical of his career (i.e. although it was his best year, he had a lot of other seasons that were pretty close in production other than batting average.)

I'd hold off on Mussina on the first ballot.

I wouldn't put Edmonds in... .no black ink, and:

    Gray Ink Batting - 60 (411), Average HOFer ≈ 144

    Hall of Fame Monitor Batting - 88 (185), Likely HOFer ≈ 100

    Hall of Fame Standards Batting - 40 (154), Average HOFer ≈ 50

Duke Snider is his only top 10 comp who's in the HOF, but Snider was better:

    1. Andruw Jones (902)

    2. Ellis Burks (901)

    3. Jason Giambi (895)

    4. Dick Allen (895)

    5. Shawn Green (888)

    6. Fred Lynn (886)

    7. Duke Snider (882) *

    8. Brian Giles (878)

    9. Reggie Smith (876)

    10. Moises Alou (875)

    Edmonds was a 4x all star, I don't think that's great.

Great (or at least flashy) defensive CF, his high in PO was 402, certainly not Willie Mays or Richie Ashburn territory.

In his 16 seasons, he played 140+ games in 7 of them. As a result, he played only 1,925 games in his career, on the short side for a HOF outfielder. An average HOFer (as an everyday player) plays about 2,135 games, with about 9,000 at bats...Edmonds had 6,612 at bats, and 1,881 hits.

I think Edmonds' numbers are a little short offensively, despite the gold gloves.

There are only a couple of sure fire HOFs in this list: Jim Edmonds, Tom Glavine, Jeff Kent, Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas. Of the rest I doubt any of them have a chance...most haven't even been All Stars let alone Hall of Fame.

I would vote for Glavine and Maddux definitely, Thomas probably, and would have to be convinced regarding anyone else.

Kent falls into the 'when Hades freezes over' category. He lost almost an entire season from a motorcycle accident (doing wheelies in traffic) during spring training, then lied to the Giants about it. Even stupider than Babe Ruth's acute alcohol poisoning season. At least Ruth was honest with the Yankees.

Without scrtutinizing the list too much, I'd have to say Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and probably Frank Thomas.

Greg Maddux - all time great - 1st ballot

    Tom Glavine - Yes

    Jeff Kent - Yes

    Frank Thomas - Yes

    No on the rest.
