This is the 2nd game in NHL history that has had suspended play, the first occurred on NOvemnber 21, 2005 (the Jiri Fischer incident)
The 1988 Stanley Cup final game between Boston and Edmonton was NOT suspended. The game was 'terminated prior to completion', and all stats from that game stand as official (hence the reason the NHL record book shows Bill Ranford as having played every minute of every game and having 19 games played, yet only a 16-2 record). The game was replayed in it's entirety (suspended games are resumed at the point of suspension).
The 1988 Stanley Cup game is the only game in NHL history which counted as a game played, and all stats stand, but no result obtained.
There have been 2 other games in NHL history which have been "terminated prior to completion", the last one occurred March 17, 1955 at the Montreal Forum when the Forum was ordered evacuated due to incessant attacks on Clarence Campbell by the Montreal fans after he had suspended Maurice Richard 4 days earlier. Detroit was leading 4-1 at the time of termination, and the game is considered a 'forfeit' under NHL rules.

"The game between the New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning at the Prudential Center on Friday night was postponed by the NHL midway through the second period when a bank of lights behind the Devils' goal went out and could not be restored. The game will be rescheduled at a later date, and NHL spokesman Frank Brown said play will be resumed from the point at which the game was suspended."
The lights went out that's all. And I'm not sure I ever can remember a game being suspended. I do remember a Flyers-Rangers pre-season game being suspended (actually cancelled after I believe the 2nd period) after President Bush made a speech on the terrorists attacks that had happened a few weeks earlier. The game was stopped, the speech was shown on the jumbotron, and then the game was cancelled.

A Red Wings Nashville Predators game was stopped during the middle of the game in 2005 when Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. He hasn't been able to play since and he's now their director of player development. The game was replayed later and Nashville won 3-2. The Lightning game was postponed because of lighting issues.

Dec. 21, 2006 Flames-Avalanche postponed due to blizzard
Oct. 22, 2005 Senators-Panthers postponed due to Hurricane Wilma
Oct. 29, 2005 Capitals-Panthers postponed due to arena damage caused by Hurricane Wilma
Jan. 27, 2000 Canadiens-Bruins game postponed due to the Habs being unable to travel to Boston from Raleigh
There was also a power outage for a Buffalo game..............
As far as a game suspended...........good question
Source(s): 1988 Cup Finals The series pitted the Oilers' offensive juggernaut against the Bruins' more balanced team. The Oilers showed their defensive prowess, surrendering just 9 goals in the four completed games. Game 4 is well-known for fog that interfered with the game and a power outage that caused its cancellation before a faceoff. This would allow the Oilers to win the Cup at home in the Northlands Coliseum and complete the "sweep" in a rescheduled Game 4. The "Lau" finally contributes a worthwhile answer...first time for everything...I do remember the Fisher ordeal. Surprisingly, they finished the Malarchuk game. Remember in 87' when they turned out the lights during the Canada-Russia WJC game? Whne the Russians had to be coercred to coming back to the ice vs. the Flyers in exhibition? Ahh, those were the days. - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

What caused this suspension? Somebody cut the lights because they were down big.
