What happened when you died?

As a little boy, my heart stopped beating for approximately 3 minutes, two times. Both times because I drowned. Technically, I was dead both times, no blood was being pumped through my body, it was all still in there, just not moving around as it should have been, and when that happens, your dead. But fortunately for me, very fortunately, I was brought back to life through CPR. My whole point is that when I was dead, there was absolutely nothing, I wasn't standing in front of big pearly gates, or a fiery inferno, nor was I floating around as though I were a ghost. Now if you have technically died like myself, what happened? Do you remember anything? Don't give me any bullshit either. I can't possibly know if you're lying or not, but I want to know what anyone might remember if anything at all, because I think you would experience the same thing I did. Nothingness.

Update:

It appears some of you have misinterpreted what it is that I'm asking... When I say that I died, I am indeed referring to the scientific definition, a definition that can be proved quite simply although it would be very unreasonable to do so. I would also like to add that I am an athiest, but I respect what people believe and I have no ill will towards religious people. I understand that my brain was starved for oxygen and I wouldn't remember anything as that would be impossible under the circumstances. I'm glad to say that I am perfectly healthy and I have not discovered any bad 'souvenirs' after either experience. I believe I was 3 the first time and 5 the second, and I remember both occasions so well, it's like playing a film in my head. But I only remember what happened before and after each incident, nothing during either incident itself, which brings me back to my question. If you DIED, can you recall the before and after? More over, can you recall what happened in-between?

    The Bible says:

"The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all." (Eccl. 9:5)

"His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts ["thoughts," KJ, 145:4 in Dy; "all his thinking," NE; "plans," RS, NAB] do perish." (Ps. 146:4)

Well, what happened to me was real, and it has changed my understanding of life forever.

When I was 13 years old in 1988, I was riding a ten-speed bicycle down a three lane highway. I was listening to a walkman, and it was almost 6:00 pm, so the sun was starting to go down, just a little bit at a time. But it became cloudy by that time, and the sky had an erie glow, and behind it shined the sun.

Anyhow, a 16 foot UPS truck was late getting back to their delivery depot, which was a few blocks from my parents' house; therefore, he was speeding to get back before he'd get into trouble. However, he was so worried, he wasn't thinking about his driving. He hit my bicycle, dragged me across 3 lanes of highway, and flipped the truck completely over. My body was thrown/dragged upon an impact of at least 55 mph for about 75-100 feet.

I was knocked out for several minutes. When I came to a conscious state again, I couldn't see for several hours. All I could see was a white, cloudy light, as I heard all of the voices of rescue personnel and others trying to help me. While I was in that state, I could see places around town, such as my school - - like an out of body experience, if you will.

I don't know what the accident did to me - - CAT scans and MRI scans done on me a few weeks after the accident revealed no brain damage. I basically survived with some road rash, a two black eyes, and a sprained ankle, which was incredible considering that the bicycle was bent like a folded piece of paper, the driver of the truck had a broken arm, and the truck he was driving was totaled out. What I experienced was a true miracle from God - - I honestly believe that I was given a second chance at life, and that he felt that it wasn't my time to go home yet.

Since then, I have had the very sporadic ability to have visions of future events - - very sporatic, and I don't know when the events will actually happen, but I understand details that are inexplicable by any other logical means. There have been times when this has been a blessing, and other moments when the visions themselves caused me a great deal of sadness and anxiety, simply because I knew of something that was going to occur in the future, but I knew that there was no way of changing destiny.

I sometimes truly wonder how my life would have been so different, had I not had what happened to me happen so many years ago.

A three year old is like jello that hasn't set yet. At that age you were barely sentient, or self aware; how could you possibly have been aware of any spiritual plane while your body was technically dead...your experience neither proves or disproves near-death experience because you didn't have one.

There is no empirical proof supporting or denying an afterlife. This is a matter of faith. You cannot expect anyone to provide you with evidence because there is no undeniable evidence either way. All near-death experiences are subjective Not everyone who technically dies has an experience. Some do. These are very real to the persons who experience them. They remain unreal and abstract to anyone who hasn't.

I had a near death type experience once although I was not injured nor did I stop breathing, I narrowly avoided a head on collision a few years ago. I'm still not sure how, because to me death appeared eminent. I had swerved to my right to avoid an oncoming car in my lane attempting to pass the car ahead of it in the other lane. I lost control and overcorrected my steering to the left. which put me directly in front of a loaded semi truck. There seemed no possibile way to avoid a collission. My whole world was filled with light.

In that moment, I entered a fugue state, time seemed to stop. I recall having a lengthy detailed conversation with God Whom I could not see but I felt His presence. I told Him I was sorry for what I'd done wrong, I needed His forgiveness, and I didn't think I was ready to go yet, because my children still needed me. I sensed Him saying "You're right." Then it was over. There was no collision, the truck seemed to have disappeared into thin air, the light was gone.

My car had stopped moving, I sat there a few seconds in shock. Then I took my foot off the brakes and drove to my destination forever changed. I know with all certainty, at that moment I had been in the presence of God. I carry the memory very closely. I will never forget it.

Believe or don't believe in the afterlife... its your choice. As for me? I have no doubts.

It's hard for me to believe that someone's heart could stop for a full three minutes without suffering permanent damage to the body. Can the brain go that long without oxygen?

Anyways, I get your point. I also don't see any reason why we would be conscious in an "afterlife" without a functioning brain. We weren't conscious before we died, so why would we continue to be conscious after we died? The number of people in afterlives would increase exponentially even if the human population on Earth stayed steady. Did you know that there have been over a trillion humans in existence? That's a lot of people in an afterlife. Anyways, one doesn't exist, so I don't really have anything to say.

My Wife had a convulsion when she was younger and her heart stopped. Technically She was dead. She says the same thing..... Nothing.

What happens at death is no mystery to Jehovah, the Creator of the brain. He knows the truth, and in his Word, the Bible, he explains the condition of the dead. Its clear teaching is this: When a person dies, he ceases to exist. Death is the opposite of life. The dead do not see or hear or think. Not even one part of us survives the death of the body. We do not possess an immortal soul or spirit.

Your confusion is from using a scientific definition of death. Scripture teaches us that when we are conceived, we enter the realm of death; that as we move through our lives it is actually all in the realm of death. In has its final conclusion in us when the process of death finally slows us down through old age or through some disease process which takes us to the grave ahead of the normal expectation of years.

Only when we get born again in Jesus Christ do we "pass FROM death TO life."

"Awake O sleeper and rise from the dead and the light of Christ shall shine upon you."

We are IN death until we are IN life!

The Bible does not talk about a light at the end of some tunnel!

The Bible does not talk about any fiery inferno after death.

The Bible does not say you must pass through any pearly gates, either!

The Bible does not say that you are going to float like a 'ghost'. etc.

Religious people make up all kinds of crap! And then they say it's in the bible (which they haven't read) and Hollywood promotes it! It is no wonder that everyone hates Christianity.

Well your time was not up :) which is a good thing huh?

Sounds like your heart may have stopped but your soul was not gone from your body maybe. So I think it would be kinda like a dream where you are there but not there. No one actually goes to heaven or hell right away anyway. That's not until judgement day. Until then you will be in your grave.

Maybe you felt, saw, nothing, because you weren't ready to die yet. After all you were brought back to life, maybe you weren't technically dead like you think. When you're soul leaves your body...then your dead. There isn't any being brought back.

If there was no blood running thorugh your body then your brain wouldn't be able to work properly, therefore you wouldn't "remember" anything.
