Stuffy nose relief...?

The whole family is sick after a weekend with toddler relatives. *sigh*

I have a stuffy nose that literally plugs up both sides (worse it's ever been, usually i only plug up one side at a time.) Nothing helps - tried hot/cold compress, steam, moist heat, chicken soup, OJ, pressure point massages.....

Now i'm going to try OTC medicines - anyone got any tips? I do NOT want nasal sprays (rebound effect) and Sudafed PE doesn't help (is Sudafed regular any different?)

Hints? Suggestions?

Started Wednesday, so might just have to let it run it's course?

Ugh....

Oh, and my dad has pneumonia, how do i make sure that I don't catch it from him?

Have you tried a humidifier if you have one handy? They can help immensely with stuffy noses.

If you don't have one handy you can make a makeshift one by either filling up a bowl with water and placing it behind a floor-level fan (the fan will draw moisture from the bowl and keep the air in the room somewhat moist), or you can place the bowl of water on a heat vent of some sort for the same effect. Then again you could also just go to Walmart and snag a cheap one for $10 or less.

Other than that I would suggest any over the counter decongestant you like, most tend to combine it with it an over the counter anti-inflammatory (such as Ibuprofen) to great effect. Your local pharmacies can generally give you great suggestions.

As for how not to get pneumonia- Stay healthy as you can.

In a household of 3 there were 2 people that got the flu while I got away with just a cold and a cough. I simply took a Vitamin C tablet once a day (helps boosts your immune system), drunk orange juice regularly, and washed my hands as needed (remember washing your hands TOO often can be counter productive).

Run hot water (from the faucet) onto a wash cloth. Ring cloth with hands and gently place it over nose and sinus area (area between eyes). The warmth will soften and loosen congestion. Do it repeatedly. Three or four times. Baby should breathe more easily. Another approach (used by my stepmother on me when I was a kid) was to rub a little dab of vicks mentholatum rum on my chest--under my undershirt. I would inhale the fumes from the stuff and it would clear my nose so that I could fall asleep. Not sure this is wise for a 5-month old though.

Best thing to do is to eat wasabi and horseradish. Why? Because it might have a rep. for being spicy, but it isn't and does you a world of good.

Horseradish does not contain capsaicin, which makes peppers spicy. Instead, the ingredients (vineagar etc.) combine to create a nose-clearing sensation that to some is considered spicy, but if you try it, you notice its not spicy at all. I really don't like wasabi, so horseradish is a better choice.

And to not catch pneumonia, stay 1 meter away from him at all times. If you must get closer wear a mask and once you're done take it off and wash your hands for a good 45 minutes. Hand Sani. is better.

medications are terrible and only cover up the problem, they dont fix it. they are like eating mints instead of brushing ur teeth for better breath, covers the stink but keeps the problem.

a stuffy nose is caused by bacteria build up in your sinus creating mucus and blocking your air passages. the best way is to rinse out your nose with a betti neti pot. its a very simple process with NO side effects besides breathing clearly haha.

dont use plastic ones though because the chemicals in the plastic eventually break down and cause more problems. go with ceramic made netis. i have a betti pot and it works wonders. feel better!!
