When did "actress" become a dirty word?

The politically correct term now is "female actor". What's that all about?

Update:

On both the Golden Globe and SAG awards "actor" and "actress" are now referred to as "male actor" and "female actor". It's still gender descriptive...and just seems odd.

Prolly the same time they became servers instead of waiters and waitress. Or Letter Carriers instead of Mail Man. Puhlease!

I don't know that it's become a dirty word but it's certainly fallen out of usage. I don't know why. I gotta say, though, I haven't heard anyone use the term "female actor" just "actor" which kinda works for me.

never heard of such a thing. I will still call a female actor an actress and a male actor and actor. x]
