Any one have comments about Publish America?
My cousin's poetry was accepted by Publish America for publication; however, I want to make sure it isn't a scam. Anybody have experience with them?

They'll publish almost anything.
Here is the story of a rather hilarious revenge scheme by a number of writers, after they found themselves maligned by publish america, for stating the truth about them.

Lets be honest, most poetry ends up published as part of a university press, very small press, or vanity press. There are all the usual paths to getting published in various poetry journals, may of which are connected to small presses. It isn't as if there are millions of poetry fans buying the books at walmart. Most book stores only carry well known, dead poets. The independents tend to carry well known poets, or at least ones that see publication regularly.
If your cousin intends to sell their poetry primarily at their own poetry readings, then they'd be better off going to an actual printer and paying the money for a print run. Since they'd be doing the sales work, they might as well be their own publisher and make the money off it. Nobody is forking out cash to buy ebook poetry from little known poets.

I published with them and I will never do it again. They take 90% of submissions whether they are decent or not. You don't get squat for commission, your works are not promoted and they hassel the author to buy buy buy. They are a market if you just want to publish something that your family members will buy-then they jack the price up to horrendous levels that no one besides your loved ones would ever consider buying it. On a $16 book (that really wasn't worth that much) selling 70 copies to my friends and family and 'buying' some of my own I got 3.50 check.. NOT WORTH IT! Tell her to try and find a good poetry agent. The agent will tell her what she needs tow ork on and what she needs to omit as well as deciding whether or not she is skilled enough for them as an agent.
