what pets go well with dogs?

I am going to buy a "German shepherd" and I heard that its better to have another dog with him so that they can play with each others when i am not at home

* I can afford buying another big size pet

* I don't want the new pet to feel jealous when I treat my German shepherd better than it

* I want something that is easy to maintain and yet will be able to play with my GSD

any suggestions

Update:

I can't buy another dog,

dogs are smart they needs care and attention and emotions most of the time

I can't give that to two dogs, one is really enough

I am not sure why you need another pet for your german shepherd, if you train it right it will be fine in the house while you are gone. I have had rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, ferrets, and my dogs did well with them. You teach your dog that your pets are a pack and they will get along, but you have to teach them to get along. Correct any behavior you don't allow, I use the command "shame". Sometimes neighbors let you have play dates with their dogs, so that might be something you could consider. It is nice than a dog park. Once you get him potty trained and house trained, he should be fine on his own, keeping in mind you keep up with walks and activity.

I would buy another German shepherd...that way you know they will have similar needs and energy levels. I would recommend you get different genders because they get along better. If you get two males one usually tries to dominate the other and that causes problems (same if you get two females).

My ferrets chase and attack my dogs..my dogs are such good dogs, they don't bite the ferrets at all. But because my ferrets boss my dogs around, I usually put the dogs in the closed bedroom for their saety. :)

I have a GSD and his best buddy that he sleeps with is a cat.
