Why do waitresses who wear a wedding band earn less tips? Do you agree and why?

I am having a disagreement with a female co-worker. She thinks I have a misogynistic tendency but I am absolutely certain, with regard to waitresses who earn tips, that I am speaking the truth here.

Simple, because they are taken and male customers tend to flirt with them. That's how they make tips. What's the point on tipping if there isn't a chance of getting a date out of it. It sucks but it's true.

could be cause maybe the customers think the flirty/nice attitude could start something if they are single, and then they leave a nice tip to flaunt their wealth. If I were a married waitress i'd take my ring off and see what happens. I'm sure the most influence has to do with sex appeal rather than availability since the sanctity of marriage isnt as well respected as it used to be.

Really? Are their studies to prove this? I would guess that attractive waitresses probably do earn more money than unattractive ones. There are studies that have proven that tall people earn more money than shorter people.

because they are unavailable, if she was single, they would be more interested in what she was doing, which would probably result in larger tips. not always, but enough for there to be a difference.
