required engine service every so many miles?
so the oil change shop says I have sludge in my engine and need a couple things done every 30k miles.. he showed me the 'sludge' but I'm wondering if this is something I really need or are they just trying to make a buck... my only problem with the car is when it shifts gears (automatic '03 Corolla) its a bit jerky.. what do you guys think? should I get a kind of service every so many miles or is just oil change enough

It is ABSOLUTELY necessary to change engine oil, oil and air filters at regular intervals as per Manufacturer's specs.
That said, some sludge may be normal by the end of the interval. Unless the engine has been badly neglected, changing oil regularly fixes that. Use good-quality products, it doesn't cost a fortune and it makes your car reliable in time.
It also depends what are "a couple of things" - filters and similar are normal consumables and that's ok (you can tell from the prices). If they suggest dismantling and replacing mechanical parts, be careful, have an expert friend evaluate the proposal and/or ask for another opinion.
And remember that brakes also need periodic servicing - getting from 0 to 60 is just half the problem...
