What does it mean when your pet rat make a gritting or clattering sound with it teeth?

It like a gritting/clattering/clicking sound...

    It's called bruxing (not sure about that spelling) and it's equivalent to a cat's purring.

    As long as they are doing it with their teeth and it's not just their breathing, it is bruxing. And generally it means they are happy. :^)

    If however it is their breathing, they could have a respiratory infection, in which case they need to go to the vet. It can sound like clicking or just loud breathing.

    It means that your rat is really happy. *smiles* it is nice to know what a good owner you are.
