Computer Fans, any help?

The fan located behind my desktop (not the DVD player fan) started to sound louder. Also it moved slower. Although I cleaned my desktop with compressed air (most of it) it didn't work. Today I heard the same sound but after 2 hours, the fan is working OK. Do you think I should get a new fan?

Update:

My desktop has also an extra fan inside with a ventilation grid on the left side.

Computer fans are extremely important because if a fan goes out you are in danger of components over heating in your computer and possibly causing a number of very serious problems. Such as frying you processor chip, causing your computer to freeze up and damaging your hard drive which could then cause data loss and/or corruption.

My recommendation would be to replace the fan to avoid possibly have more serious problems later.

    hi there

yes i would....your pc,s fans are a intergral part of your pc and if one isnt running at its optimal speed and performance it can directly affect the cpu, graphic card, memory and just about everything inside your pc

and with fans costing less than £5 its not a expensive replacement...and takes around 5 minutes to fit

pc fans tend to wear out after so long and this is normally caused by the fans bearings,,these are tiny balls that allow the fan to spin quietly and if these become damaged they become noisy and this is when they need replacing

there are small holes in the middle of the fan and you can apply household 2 in 1 oil to keep the fan working well however this is more of the prevention than cure and should be done twice yearly

allthough there are alot of inexpensive pc fans i have started to use "AcoustiFan DustProof Quiet 120mm Fans"( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prod... ) ...these are more expensive than normal pc fans however they are extrememly quiet and dont attract as much dust as the normal fan hence "dustproof" ...however for normal pc fans i would recommend the "Akasa AK-FN053 120mm Smart fan "( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prod... ) ...these are reliable and do a good job of moving air around

another cooling solution thats become very popular among us enthusiasts are the closed loop water cooling set ups..these are pre-filled cpu cooler that dont require re-filling and are fitted the same way as a standard cpu cooler....and one of the most popular models is the "Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler"( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prod... ).....this is a excellent peice of kit and drops cpu tempertures by around 10 degrees..and looks good when fitted inside your pc.......

i hope this helps, any problems let me know

    good luck mate !

if it keeps making unusual noise you could take it out and put some wd-40 on it or graphite...put it back in and see if it makes a difference ....if it does not i would look into getting a new case fan.....im assuming this is an exhaust fan....you can buy them here at newegg.com, Best Buy and also Radio Shack....

    newegg case fans------http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCa...
