Bought used car, question about registration fee in CA?
I bought a used 2008 Toyota Corolla from a family friend that recently moved out of the country. I bought it for very cheap (bought it for about $7,000 with only 16,000miles).
What I totally forgot about after buying the car was the registration fee. My friends are telling me it's about 10%, so about $700. Well, I can't afford this! Is there any way I can get around this registration fee, for example, stating that I received the car as a gift? Or can I state that I only paid $3,000? How stern is the CA DMV?
Does anyone have an experience relating to this?

You can report any amount from zero on up but if the state thinks it may be the wrong amount, they are going to ask both you and the seller what the selling price was. If there was a check issued for the car, you would be wise to report the amount of that check because there will be a paper trail. The state has a special department for this because "understating" is done so often. You "forgot" the other fees?
