For the ground war (as opposed to the air war) the first major battle was the Battle of Dieppe and was a raid at Dieppe, France, on August 19, 1942. This is the first major ground battle the Canadians faced during WW II.

This should at least help and I could not tell if you wanted Air or Ground or combined. Additionally, the British Commonwealth were together in this fight from 10 September, 1939 until the conclusion of the war in both the Pacific and European Theaters of Operation (PTO and ETO respectively).

    Gerry D.

EDIT UPDATE: The Battle for Hong Kong was more of a capitulation than a battle. If the Canadians were in Singapore at the time with the British counterpart that would be a different matter entirely. Battle for Dieppe was the first major Battle the Canadians faced. Mel has some good points below however, I just take one exception to this one perspective of his response.

First fight would depend on how you defined it. You could argue the Battle of the Atlantic (personally this would be my answer). You could also argue Battle of Britain, if you were looking for land troops you could argue Hong Kong, if you were looking for Canadian troops stationed in England you would say Dieppe.

As for who fought with Canada that would be the Allied forces, that's a long list but the big ones would be Britain & the rest of the British Commonwealth (like Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland), USSR, and later the USA.

Hong Kong proceeds Dieppe in the land war so I think you need to add some sort of condition in Gerry D's answer to make that correct. Canada has two battalions in Hong Kong, almost 2,000 men so I don't think you could say that's not important or not a major battle.

Edit: No offense Gerry D but you did just what I said, you added a condition and called Hong Kong a capitulation and not a battle. Doesn't that kind of prove the point I made? The question was "first fight" you can't tell me those Canadians in Hong Kong were not fighting. Anyway not much point in going back and forth about it since I'm sure the homework assignment has already been handed in.

Canadians joined the British Army during both wars, particularly the RAF, as did some Americans before the US was formally in them. I know Canadians landed on a Normandy beachhead and fought in France during both world wars. I don't know if Canadians fought in the Pacific but a lot of Aussies did.

In fact today it's still argued whether in WW I the Canadian pilot who was pursuing Baron Von Richthofen shot him or an Aussie gunner on the ground did. Consensus now is the Aussie did because the bullet came up from below the plane and he had flown upright over the Aussie trying to avoid the Canadian.
