OMG I am in so much angst over having my cat spayed only because I am worried for her safety?
First off I didn't catch it before she went into heat and so she has been going in and out now since Nov.She got ill when we got her so i am afraid that something will happen to her (I have bad luck in life a lot)Also I have it scheduled for tomorrow morning and she is still in a heat she started the 14th i thought she'd be done by now she doesn't usually go this long--first one was 4 days second like 5 next one 5 or 6--anyway I am so nervous it is making me physically ill they don't do preop bloodwork where I go--they said I could get some for 100. and then wait til the 17th of March then because they are all booked up--What are some NICE opinions please. I have had 5 other animals neutered or spayed (3 females and 2 males) so I am responsible I am just really scared this time!
Thanks
Yes she seems very healthy now she has successfully had her shots and at the moment I am playing feathers on a string with her! She seems healthy but she does seem to drink a lot and she has diarrhea again--I think that is because I switched her food recently.
Thank you all so far for your great answers and for being kind!
Oh and the bloodwork would be a day it is just that it would come back to late to get her spayed then tomorrow morning and they are so booked and I think the doc is going to be gone a few days at the end of the week

first of all, catch your breath - you have been thru several previous neuterings before - and i would assume the vet won't operate if she's sick - you sound like a very conscientious pet owner, and 'mentally' you know that this is a good thing - - but with everything else going on, the 'emotional' part had tried to take over.
SInce i don't know what kind of sickness she had when you got her, or how it affected her long-term, hopefully she is fully recovered from that - is she generally healthy? Most of the time, pre-op bloodwork, is NOT necessary unless there is a problem -
if you trust this vet, then talk to him/her about your concerns, when you take her in tomorrow (or tonight) - they are not going to do anything to put her in greater risk, they want this to go as smoothly and stress-free as you do!
Make sure when you bring her home, you give her extra gentle care....she will know that you missed her, (I can see it in your words already) - try to be calm, she can "read" your emotions better than you think - and by you being stressed over this, even tho she dosen't know the cause of it, may absorb some of your stress also.
good luck,

What kind of crappy chop shop vet are you going to? Let me guess-- the back of a veterinary van, a spay/neuter only clinic, or your local low cost rescue group "they don't do preop bloodwork where I go." Most vets are THRILLED when an owner wants to do bloodwork for their pet because it means the vet is more likely to know if the pet is going to make it out of surgery ok or if there is something more that needs to be done (fluids, different anesthetic, etc.) in order to decrease risks to your pet. Any vet not willing to do preoperative bloodwork really shouldn't be doing surgery. I would be terrified of going to a chop shop with my pet as well. Call around, find a different veterinary Hospital, and get preoperative bloodwork done before your appointment.
Also, cats are induced ovulators, meaning they will continue to go into heat (often) until they become pregnant or their ovaries are removed. Cats are designed to make more cats, its just how they are.

Cats can be spayed while in heat. During this time, there is a greater blood flow to the organs and they are swollen. So there may be an extra fee.
Her ability to handle anesthesia will not be affected by being in heat.
Having to wait 3 weeks for bloodwork, is an exceptionally long time. Any regular clinic should be able to do bloodwork the day of surgery in house. I had mine done the day before by an outside lab because it was slightly cheaper ($70) and included a heartworm antibody test. Since she was positive for heartworms, it took them an extra day to re-test and make sure.

Don't be scared.... everytime an animal is going into surgery it is a scarey thing. Call and ask the vet if it is ok she is in heat for the procedure... they know if they can or cannot do surgery while she is in heat. It's good and better the earlier to get her fixed right away. Just stay positive... everything should be ok

it really is the best option to spay your cat. we have/had 3 dogs and one cat in the last 20 years, all of them have been spayed/neutered and all of them have been fine. as long as you have a good vet your cat should be fine, they give pain med. out so your cat probably wont even feel anything. it really is the best option for you and your cat, unless you want kittens of course!

I would have waited until she went off call - but if your vet is as booked up as that you might not have much choice. The risks are very low - lower than dying from kittening.

The veterinarian spays and neuters all day long. Don't worry. She'll be treated good and will be just fine!

Call the vet and ask if her heat will affect surgery.
Surgery is a well known procedure done a1M x/year.
