I'm considering buying an XBOX 360, but there are 2 models.....?
one for $199, and one for $299. I don't know the difference. I heard rumors that the cheaper one is just the old ones proned to the RROD repackaged. And did they ever solve the RROD problem anyway?

Go with the 299$ one, its the "Elite" model, and the 120GB is great...it allows you to download your discs to the Hard Drive, which makes loading times minimal. I have one and have tons of game installed on it, and i still have 40GB left.
And yes, they pretty much fixed the RROD, when you go to buy one, look through the opening on the back where you can see the barcode, there will be a manufacturing date, and if the unit was made on or after August 2009, then it is a Jasper Chip Model, and is the newer chipset that doesnt suffer the RROD as much. Just google "XBOX 360 Jasper" to find more on it.

The two models are the Arcade and the Elite. The arcade version does not come with a harddrive and you will have to buy one seperately, which you will need if you want to do some serious gaming and have any kind of memory. The elite is equipped with a 120GB harddrive and that is the major difference between the two. They are relatively the same machine, but more arcade models are manufactured than elites, therefore the elite model is probably a little bit better, and less likely to get the RROD.
As stated by other answerers (props), the 'Jasper' versions of these consoles have had minimal problems with RROD and overheating (which damages the CPU and causes RROD). You could compare them to the PS3 slim in terms of energy output.
