Why does God answer some prayers but not others?

In reading the Bible I have learned that Jesus said if you ask ANYTHING in my name you will receive it..but sometimes this is just not so. Then, of course, I am told that "God works in mysterious ways" or "it wasn't His will" or my favorite "everything happens according to His wishes" soo....what is the use or prayer again??

Prayer, like meditation, has a positive effect on the body to relieve stress, decrease blood pressure, etc. It does not effect the possible outcome of an event.

I can understand your frustration. What's the point of asking when you know the answer might be "no"?

We're told that God answers all prayers, but that He may not answer them immediately or in a way we would like. But God knows all things, and He knows how to answer our prayers in a way that will benefit us the most.

For example, last night I lost my flash drive that had my homework on it. I prayed and prayed that I could find it, but I never found it. So I tried some different ways of getting my homework back (i.e., using the search feature, retrieving documents from the recycling bin, etc.) and in the end I not only got my homework back, but I learned a lot about searching and finding lost files. I ended up recovering a lot of important files I lost.

As you know, many answers to prayers aren't this obvious. But if you look for them, you'll find that the Lord doesn't always give you what you want, but instead He gives you what He knows you need. I find that the more I learn about prayers (and how God answers them), the more I see the Lord's hand in my life.

Prayers are answered in accordance with the will of God. Jesus did not want to face the pain of crucifixion and asked that it be taken away, but only if it was the will of the Father. His prayer was answered in accordance with the will of the Father.

I recently prayed for something rather important to me. That prayer was answered the very next day, aside and apart from any possibility of being chance or coincidence. I assume that it was God's will. If it hadn't been I would not have been angry.

Perhaps you need to read the part that says :~

"You receive not because you ask amiss"

Prayer requests still have to be in harmony with the Holy Spirit and God's word.

Some people think God is like a "genie" just to serve their own selfishness.

Every single prayer is heard and answered. Every single one. It may not be the answer you wanted or it may not be right when you want it. But I promise it is answered. It's on God's time, not ours.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and apbraideth not ; and it shall be given him.

6:But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.

Perhaps you are asking for things contrary to what God wants?

    1 John 5:14

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

If you refuse to do your homework and then pray that God will help you pass your test, think again.

Pray for good things and see what happens.

GOD does not appear when we want him to, but he is always on time! there are somethings we must go through in order to become stronger, wiser and it will make use a better person....if god rescues use from every little thing then we would never learn anything from our experiences....if he gives use all that we need then why would we need him we would be caught

"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."

    Hebrews 11:6

"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. "

    James 1:5-8

"Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.'

"For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!' "

And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

    Luke 18:1-8

"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God."

    James 4:1-4

" If I had cherished sin in my heart,

    the Lord would not have listened;

    but God has surely listened

and heard my voice in prayer.

    Praise be to God,

who has not rejected my prayer

or withheld his love from me!"

    Psalm 66:18-20

"Have faith in God," Jesus answered. "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."
