What vegetables or herbs are hard to kill?

I have a balcony, but no yard. I want to start growing fresh herbs or vegetables. I have good sunlight and lots of space. Please recommend some vegetables or herbs that I can grow in planters on my balcony.

(I know this question has been asked before, but none of the answers were quite right)

Pretty much all the herbs are easy to grow in planters with good sunlight and watering. Pick the herbs you like and plant them in good rich soil in planters. Peppers and Tomatoes are easy to grow in planters be careful to not let them completely dry out. Planters often need more watering than in-the-ground.

Ant elimination is really going to depend on the species of ant and the conditions of the area where they are at. I'm assuming that the ants are in rich soil, maybe with mulch mixed in. First you must identify the ant species you're having trouble with. Harvester ants (more likely Rough Harvester ants due to the color) have an extremely painful bite. Their nests are generally flat, sometimes with a slight rise or dip near the entrance(s). These ants respond well to bait such as Amdro. Also, Amdro is one of the safest baits on the market. Odorous house ants can easily be identified by the odor your finger will have after you use it to crush an ant. The odor will be very strong and unpleasant... kind of orangey-chemical. These ants do not respond well to bait. Get some liquid pesticide and flood their nest. Their nests are generally shallow so this is the best method. Read the label entirely and make sure it says, specificly, that you can use it in gardens. If it's any other type of ant, try baiting them first. If that doesn't work you'll have to resort to a residual spray. Don't use Raid... this causes most colonies to evacuate the nest and split into several smaller colonies, compounding the problem.

Just about any herb and most all veggies except deep rooted types (carrots, potatoes), spreading types (pumpkins, squash), or those needing a large number of plants to get enough produce to make it worth while, (corn, peas and beans) can be grown successfully in patio containers. And if you have big enough and deep enough planters, you can probably grow anything you like. As far as hard to kill? Horseradish, once established, is almost impossible to kill.

There are varieties of tomatoes that are specifically for containers. You also might be able to grow some leaf lettuce in a shallow, rectangular planter. As for herbs, I have a strawberry jar in which I have planted rosemary, chives, thyme and oregano. Basil also grows well in containers.

Basil is hard to kill and grows like crazy - just try to trim it back a lot.

I have also had good luck w/ oregano and sage.

Potted tomatoes can do very well, too.

U can easily grow cuccumber, salad, mint, france beans, red coloured raddish and brinjal. just take care of the spacing.

plant to plant distance of cucumber, france bean is 1-1.5 feet.

plant to plant distance of brinjal is 2-2.5 feet. and dont bother about raddishsalad and mint. just spread seeds and you will get lots.
