Why was the Secret Service made the agency responsible for protecting the president? Why not some other agency?

The Secret Service existed originally to suppress counterfeit currency, until the assassination of McKinley in 1901, when they took the duty of protecting the US president. Why was the Secret Service chosen and not some other agency or the military or some group newly formed?

Basically it was the only Federal law enforcement agency that could start protecting the President immediately back then. There wasn't an FBI, or CIA.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Who would you suggest? Homeland Security didn't exist. The FBI was an unarmed investigative agency. The military would have argued over which branch should do it.
