Christians, does your church believe in and teach that the gift of tongues is for today?

The reason I ask is many have been taught false doctrines, and hope to get it cleared up with those who are willing to.

Some churches are teaching that it went out with the dark ages or that it went out with the early church? Or that's it gibberish? Does your church teach this and what is your belief?? Thanks for your input and God bless you for sharing.

Update:

Fireball, you certainly don't have to be in the Pentecostal church in order to speak in tongues. It depends entirely on your relationship to Jesus Christ, but of course, the Pentecostals do encourage this. You don't get the gift without receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Assemblies of God Questions about Tongues

    http://ag.org/top/Beliefs/baptmhs_faq_tongues.cfm

It does seem almost contradictory that the apostle Paul should make the following statements in successive verses: "I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue" (1 Corinthians 14:18, 19). The seeming contradiction evaporates, however, when we examine the chapter more fully. Paul was addressing a specific problem in the church at Corinth; namely, spontaneous utterances in tongues in an assembly of believers without accompanying interpretations. He equated this with disorder and confusion (1 Corinthians 14:13,32,33). He purposely exaggerated ("five intelligible words ... than ten thousand words in a tongue") to make his point. His exaggeration was not made to invalidate the benefit and use of tongues, but to bring order to the church. Actually he encouraged the exercise of the spiritual gifts of tongues and interpretation of tongues by explaining in some detail how they should operate (1 Corinthians 14:26-33). Also he placed great value on tongues in the believer's devotional life (1 Corinthians 14:4).

When biblical truths fall into obscurity and neglect, people often seek for explanations. When speaking in tongues is no longer experienced, they ask the reason, and critics have answered by isolating this particular statement and giving it an unsound meaning. Paul was not opposed to tongues. He said he himself spoke in tongues more than all (1 Corinthians 14:18). His point was that if someone speaks in tongues in a public assembly, it is essential that there be an interpretation so the listeners will be instructed.

That is a well query. First Corinthians chapters 12 by way of 14 recognition at the staggering items of the holy spirit. God gave those to a few as a sign that he used to be now not utilising common Israel however used to be now blessing the Christian “Israel of God” defined in Galatians 6:sixteen. These items of the spirit had been constructing blocks of a form – they helped to set up the child Christian congregation and helped it to mature to maturity. The apostle Paul defined that once having served their intent, those staggering items could ultimately give up: “Whether there are items of prophesying, they'll be performed away with; whether or not there are tongues, they'll stop.” So we learn at one million Corinthians thirteen:eight. So scriptures make it transparent that those items – adding the present of tongues - could stop to exist. When? Acts eight:18 displays that the items of the spirit had been acquired “by way of the laying on of the fingers of the apostles.” So while the final apostle died, passing at the items died too. When people who had acquired the items from the apostles died, the items themselves could disappear. But regardless of in view that via this time, the Christian congregation could be good headquartered and could have unfold to many lands. Hannah

    My my my.

The god teaches that the god speaks clearly. I'm sure we should do the same. ~Errr... wait... hmm, I'm sure the god wouldn't speak in gibberish or expect the god's people to do so, but I don't have a verse support that statement.

Though I do understand that when the god spoke to the prophets, the people saw these prophets and all they saw were prophets behaving odd like a paraplegic gone wild on epilepsy. Though if this was how we were to follow the prophets, then they would have taught us this way. But Jesus didn't. He said "hear oh israel..." not "hahallalalalaghghalalalllalllp". How does one hear that?

The gift of tongues, will never be available to the people, because they are not chosen by the god. The god does not speak to them like the god spoke to the prophets, if they did, then... we would hear something new that John16:12 says that jesus could not say.

I personally consider it to be blasphemy of the holy spirit: Matthew 12:32-33 For to lie about the god is a grave sin, to fool yourself is even worse. Well that's if that is the case.

Oh I must note that paul is an anti-christ son of a herodian.

The miracle that happened with the apostles was this: they were speaking in a language and all nations could understand what they were saying. People can easy be deceived by the devil. The devil might give some words to some people during the pray, words that no body understands them. This is not speaking in languages. Speaking in languages , spiritually speaking is this: a man speaks one language and all nations understand it. Read careful the verses. Do see this kind of miracle in one church today?I haven t heared.Maybe because the word of God can be well known today. I know an old saint , romanian saint that did understand all languages from this earth but this is not the same as speaking in languages (still a miracle)

    God be with you!

If God does something 2,000 years ago, He can do it today.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 states that speaking in tongues is ONE of (not the only) manifestation of the Holy Spirit.

Some churches teach that all Christians must speak in tongues, but that's not what Scripture says.

In 1 Cor. 12:29-30 Paul asks Are all apostles? No. Are all prophets? No. Are all teachers? No. In other words, within the body of Christ, different people are called by God to have different gifts. If someone states that all are supposed to speak in tongues, but that not all do, then are all supposed to be apostles as well but not all are? Are all called to be prophets? Are all called to be teachers? No. Likewise, not all are called by God to speak in tongues.

It is simple. Not all speak in tongues because God doesn't give the gift to everyone. Speaking in tongues is not the sign of salvation, but a sign. If anything, the fruit of the indwelling Spirit of God is listed in Gal. 5:22-23 is the sign of salvation

And speaking in tongues is not a requirement of salvation.

Marj - "the gift of tongues" refers specifically to the meetings-use, i.e. giving to the church of a message in tongues.

Privately I & all my brothers & sisters can pray in tongues, but, in a particular meeting, I may or may not receive a GIFT of tongues.

Same for the other attributes listed in "the gifts" passage.

    (Compare 1 Cor. 1:4-7, 12:8-12)

My church does. The gift of tongues will only cease when our Lord Jesus comes back again and we see Him face to face (1 Corinthians 13:8-12). God bless you.

Yep, the gift of tongues is for today.

    Mark 16:17"These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;

These things do not happen without the Holy Spirit, in a need to justify their position some will say this does not happen.

Gift of tongues has no validity today, because people are expert in different languages and hence, preaching is very easy. But the situation back then was totally different. There wasn't education progressed like this and hence a direct gift from God was necessary. God interferes when we are absolutely helpless in something. Apostles needed the help of such a gift because they were supposed to travel across the world to preach the word. Without the gift of tongues, I don't think St. Thomas would have been able to establish the church in India.

My church does teach that the gift of tongues is for today but if I hadn't received it myself I would still be thinking that people were faking it or that it was demonic. However once you experience it yourself there is no denying it.

If you would like to know more about it and the various uses of speaking in tongues, please feel free to message me.
