Another anti-gay republican outed as gay! Why do republicans repeatedly vote against themselves?

I used to wonder why it is that poor and middle class people would vote republican against their best interest but with the steady flow of republican legislators that vote against gay rights that are later found to be gay leaves me to draw the conclusion that there are some deep seated self esteem issues at work. Can some one help me understand this self abusive behavior?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Republican state Sen. Roy Ashburn said Monday he is gay, ending days of speculation that began after his arrest last week for investigation of driving under the influence.

Ashburn, who consistently voted against gay rights measures during his 14 years in the state Legislature, came out in an interview with KERN radio in Bakersfield, the area he represents

I think it's a mistake to simply point at one party or the other. We're all prone to over-react to things in ourselves that make us feel ashamed. Your observation, however, I think is correct - you'll note that many of the political claims of the GOP seem actually to apply to themselves rather than to the Democratic Party. Projection is a very useful tool to get people to follow you against someone - simply label your opponents as the enemy they hate about themselves. The Democratic Party has its own habit of apparently "voting against themselves", though - in their case, it seems more to be a learned fear of "looking wrong" than of being bought off, but there are lots of reasons, probably including some of the same reasons as many of the Republicans.

It is crazy, shows that the whole American Oligarchy in DC can book a ticket in an MFO. (Meanwhile Identified Flying Object=Cannon Ball) Germany's capital has a gay Mayor, socialist. Germany's 2nd largest town, Hamburg, has a gay Mayor, Christian-Democrat, both towns sailing fairly well in troubled economical waters. Funny in that context, the "Republican" coalition partner in Hamburg, tried to blackmail the Chr.-Democrat in hope to take over, then he went public to the press in a charade with no dignity - and go figure - Hamburg citizens voted that bigot sucker out in no time, as long as Ole von Beust doesn't celebrate public parties or tries to make being gay OBLIGATORY (lol) they rather look at the political performance in CLEVER countries, and I would bet my last dime, THERE B.Clinton had not lied.

Well, America is a very symbolistic country. Its main goal is to make people hate anything that they can't understand. Our symbol for a good man, is a strong man waving an American Flag and joining the army. Therefore, if you want to be a good American you better not complain about your situation or be gay. Therefore, if you know you're gay you have to hide it as furiously as you can. You have to be the total opposite from who you are and hope that no one finds out that you're in bathroom stalls soliciting sex from men.

Most people in California voted against more gay rights! Could it be because he was voting the way his district wanted him to? He actually represents his constituents? Oh ! I forgot you are a koolade drinker! I forgot that facts confuse you. Be sure to buy more koolade.

If I were you, I would not remind people of "self-abusive behavior."

    Gay rights?

In what way are homosexuals being repressed? They're not!

There are many homosexual republicans. They believe in Capitalism, law and order, and a strong US foreign policy. They just choose not to force acceptance of their lifestyle on everyone else, which is what "gay rights" is all about.

There is not ONE THING I have a right to do in this country that a homosexual does not also have the right to do.
