Is there a risk of me transmitting an STD to my girlfriend while giving her oral sex?

She's said no either way, but I'm pretty sure she's wrong. I'm not 100% sure (it's something like 99.99999% though), so I wanted to ask.

We are both virgins, and neither of us have had sexual contact with anyone else, not even each other. Neither have we been tested for STDs, but while I'm certain that doesn't matter, she seems to think tests would still be in order "to be sure" I couldn't giver her something. (sigh)

I don't want to argue with her, so I left it at that, but it's still bugging me, so...

Fastest way to get the points is a well-thought out answer, properly spelled. With a reliable source, please, preferably online.

Update:

oops, when I said "she's said no", I mean, refused oral sex. She does think there's a risk involved.

Update 2:

also keep in mind: she thinks *I* will give *HER* a disease, which I think is silly.

It's possible to get oral herpes (cold sores) not the genital type. The oral type is not considered to be an STD since there are other ways to transmit it then having sex and kissing.

If you were passing a cup immediately back and forth, with some one who had an out break of cold sores on their mouth at the time then yes you could. If the cup had been discarded for a while then it would be less likely. Herpes doesn't like to live on objects or away from the body for more then seconds.

One of the best examples of STD is herpes. HSV-1 is transmitted through saliva. Kissing, using the same eating utensils, sharing personal items (such as a razor), and receiving oral sex from someone who has HSV-1 can cause you to contract the virus. HSV-2 is sexually transmitted. Until recently, scientists assumed that HSV-1 infections were not sexually transmitted. Now, scientists know that either type can be found in either the oral or genital area, and at other sites. In fact, researchers estimate that HSV-1 is responsible for up to half of all new cases of genital herpes.

To infect people, HSV-1 and HSV-2 must get into the body through broken skin or a mucous membrane, such as inside the mouth or in the genital area. In addition to the fluid from fever blisters, each virus can be carried in bodily fluids like saliva, semen, and fluid in the female genital tract. Both herpes viruses may cause genital infections that are clinically indistinguishable, and both can be contagious even if the infected person does not have active symptoms or visible blisters.

STD infection is not an ordinary health problem. If you are concerned with your sexual/reproductive health, having an STD Testing at Local STD Testing Labs is a wise decision. STD Testing is done confidentially and proven to yield an accurate and reliable result.

There is a possibility of transmission of sexually transmitted diseases if one of the parties involved has an open sore, cut or wound albeit a lower probability than intercourse without protection. I also think both of you should be tested, as it will give her some peace of mind and may make the sexual experience better for both of you with her at ease and comfortable. Wikipedia mentions the possibility of transmission of such diseases through oral sex.

By the way, I must congratulate you on asking for a well-thought out answer that is properly spelled.

Both of you get tested first before having sex. STDs are something that one should take care of right away. Some STDs are asymptomatic, meaning it does not show any symptoms. This makes it difficult to know who is infected and not. The only way to detect STD is by taking the test.
