Mostly for Christians. In His own image?
When God creates man in His own image, what does that mean to you?
Does God have two arms, two legs, eyes? Or is it perhaps meant more figuratively to signify that we share some characteristics with God? In which case, which ones?
And how does God's image differ from ours?
All views welcome.

Opinions vary. IMHO I believe it to be primarily a physical image with spiritual and virtuous elements. In the bible God;
Sits
Has hands
Has feet
Has hair
Has a face
Has arms
Has a backside(Moses seen Him from behind while God was walking by on the Mount).
Has a voice
etc.

That God created man in His image doesn't imply a physical image but an emotional and intellectual image. Man is the only animal capable of reasoned thought, and ultimately possessing the knowledge of good and evil. The "fall of man" was the moment man realized his own morality and acted contrary to it.

In my view, there are metaphors in the Bible. Some people insist that the entire Bible must be interpreted literally, but I disagree. There is no way to know for certain what God meant by "image." It could mean that God could possibly resemble us in terms of our physical characteristics. It could mean that God is an emotional, sentient being like us. I believe that it is likely that humans are similar to God not in any physical aspect (after all, God is a spirit, and does not occupy a physical body), but we are similar to God in that we are creative, intelligent, and we have emotions.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male nd female created he them. The word "image" means a predestinated thought, plan, or purpose. God already knew, of course, what his plan was before he created man. He knew that he would someday need a body to dwell in and to be our ultimate sacrifice for sin before he ever created Adam. It isn't really that complicated. God can do anything, and knows even our very thoughts before we speak them. Jesus was, is, and always will be God. He is the only God we will ever see.

Elohim said, 'Let us make man in our image.'...
So man was made in the image of Elohim (the Father, Word & Holy Spirit).
Man was made a spirit, soul & body.
First was formed a body of soil. Then the soul. Then the Spirit breathed into Adam, that he became a living soul (spiritual-soul).
So the spirit is the heart. The soul is the mental choices. The body is the flesh.
I believe God has the physical shape of humans (the Father, but He is too bright/strong for us to see). The heart/love that Is His Spirit. His decisions/reason/logos is His Soul.

God is spirit.
We are made in his image: meaning thoughts, caring and ability to reason. We also have a spirit and a soul that is eternal.
Animals were not made in his image: they have no spirit, therefore will not live forever
When God became flesh (Jesus) then he had 2 arms, 2 legs and eyes.
God is perfect, we are sinful. That is why God had to become sin (Jesus) in order to destroy the second death.
No one can see God the Father

When the Bible says that we are created in God's image, it means we have a mind, heart, and will like God.
Mind to think
Heart to feel
Will to act

Well, I honestly can't say for sure. Some people believe that He breathed His "soul" into you. Where animals weren't created in the image of God so they have no sense of right or wrong and won't go to heaven or hell, but people will go to heaven or hell and all. I don't believe that it meant, that we actually really look like him, though. , a Christian.

I am an ex-Christian atheist, and my experience was that the question doesn't arise in Christian minds. They actually see heaven, where they aspire to go, as a place where all the heavenly beings are in human form, including god. Kind of like Valhalla, where all the hero's and gods swagger around with swords and shields. I like that, that would be a cool place to go when I die! Alas........!
