Can you request to have your tonsils removed?

I know this sounds like a frivolous question, but in the last year and 3 months I have had 4 massive tonsil infections and intermittent swelling and pain in between. I've been to the doctor each time and they put me on antibiotics. This clears it up temporarily, but then it seems to come back. I have thought long and hard about this, and although the idea of having surgery is scary, it's even scarier to think that I might have this happen all of the time. I know that sounds dramatic, but when my brother was little he had something similar, and they waited 4 years hoping he would 'grow out of it.' I'm 22, I wonder if I'm beyond growing out of something like this.

So... can I reasonably ask to have them just taken out? Thanks!

Update:

I actually have considered speaking with my doctor, and since I'm fighting off yet another infection at the moment, I'm going back to see him. I just wondered if he would scoff at me for asking, so I thought I'd ask beforehand.

Have you even thought about discussing this with your own doctor?
