Is it safe to eat potatoes cooked in possibly contaminated water if it was not boiled before putting them in?

We had a water main pipe break today and the water company sent out an issue that all water could be contaminated and it should only be used for showering and if you need to cook to boil it first with at least a minute. It shouldnt be used for drinking, brushing teeth or washing dishes.

The problem is we cooked potatoes in the water (cubed, peeled potatoes). The water was not brought to a boil before the potatoes were put in, but the potatoes then cooked in the water which was boiling for 20 minutes. Is this safe to eat?

The water boiled and the germs were killed. You are safe

Think of it this way. You put a chicken in cold water that may have salmonella. At that point the water is contaminated. 2 hours later, you are eating chicken soup with peace of mind.

I'm sure they are perfectly fine to eat, if they cooked in boiling water than any bacteria that may have been in the water was definitely killed. I would have boiled the water first but I don't think it makes much of a difference

Yes... it's safe.. as long as the potatoes were cooked in boiling water. It doesn't matter what happened before that.

If the water's contaminated, then no it's not safe. Why take a chance on getting ill?
