Is my 5 week old baby sleeping too much ?

My son just hit the 5 week mark today and tonight, he had a normal feeding at 7:30 or so and fell asleep around 8 pm . He has been sleeping since then and I am getting a bit worried . I picked him up at 11:30 to change his diaper and he had a good pee, and took the whole 4 oz feeding but kept his eyes closed during and went right back to sleep after . Do I have reason to be concerned or am I just being paranoid ? I should probably be thrilled that he's slept so long but being worried isn't allowing me to sleep . Any answers would be great . Thanks :)

Update:

He usually gets his bath around 7, then wakes up every 3 hours for feedings during the night . Also, he is just getting over a bit of a cold ( stuffy nose & cough ) that his older brother brought home from school so he has been a bit restless for the past week .

as long as he is eating every 3 hours or so he should be fine. You also said he was getting wet diapers thats a good sign. If ever he stops having wet diapers then that might be a sign to worry because he could be dehidrated. And as long as he seems to be maintaining a healthy weight or gaining. When my daughter was around that age I had to wake her up every three hours to feed her and change her. now she cries if I don't have the bottle ready by two-three hours in between feedings. If he is sick that could make him want to sleep more too. Not saying he is but IF he is that could be why too. If your concerned bring it up with your doctor or one of his/her nurses or you can call the ob department at your local hospital. But every baby is different. so. Hope everything works out.

My daughter is 9 months old now, when she was a newborn through about 3 months she had periods were she would eat, then sleep and that's all she would do all day. When playing she would seem to get tired easily and just doze off. I don't think anything is wrong, as long as he is eating okay and doesn't feel or look sick. I have been told that when babies sleep more and eat a lot they are usually going through a growth spurt. But if you are really concerned you can always take him in just to ease your mind. I know I do that if I start to worry.

No ... it doesn't sound abnormal. At five weeks all my son did was sleep. In fact, he's 9 weeks and he still sleeps quite a bit. Not nearly as much as when he was first born, but I thought the same thing ... "is there something wrong with my baby" and there wasn't. Now if he's not waking up to eat, or won't eat when you wake him up or offer him a bottle (or the breast), then I think that would be reason for concern.

At this age if he isn't losing weight or has any medical issues then you can let him sleep as long as he needs/wants to. He'll wake up if he gets hungry. Don't worry about it, at some point babies will start sleeping longer stretches and some just do it earlier than others.

They sleep a lot. They are still developing. My six month old still has times where he sleeps most of the day. You'll get over worrying. I didn't sleep much until he was about 2 months old. I would say he is fine.

Its perfectly normal. My daughter did that also. They'll sleep most the day until they get around 3 or 4 months.
