Good ways to look for accessible housing?

I am planning on going to law school in the fall (everything taken care of, still awaiting a few responses), but, all of the law schools that have accepted me are too far away for me to tour the area when looking for housing. I have mobility issues that make stairs difficult, several flights impossible. What would be good things to ask/look for when dealing with a rental agency when I cannot tour ahead of time?

Since stairs are difficult for you, ask for a unit on the first floor or for a building with an elevator, and request that your unit be as close to the elevator as possible. Most apartment managers and rental agencies are willing to accommodate individuals with physical disabilities. I don't know if you use a wheelchair or scooter to get around, but if so, you could also ask for a handicapped unit - one with a bigger doorway into the apartment and the bathroom, as well as grab bars in the shower area. Not every apartment complex will have these sorts of upgrades, but they're worth asking for if you need them. One thing I would look for/ask about is the proximity of the parking space to the unit/elevator. Sometimes the parking lots are nowhere near the apartment itself. Finally, check into the location of the laundry room and manager's office relative to your unit. Some places let you pay rent online, but others will require that you go down and hand deliver the check, so that's something to consider.

    Congratulations on law school!

You can't. No rental agency, unless it advertised as specialized in helping people with disabilities find housing, can. It is just too much to expect a rental agent who has not met you to understand your specific needs unless they are very mild.

Example - you ask for no steps and there are no steps into the house or within the house - except to the basement. No big deal right? The washing machine and dryer are in the basement. That's the mistake I made in grad school and I thought I had everything covered!

Next time I moved I stayed in an Extended Stay America motel and did my home hunting once I got there. Took me 6 months, but it was a comfortable 6 months and I wasn't tied to a lease I could not get out of. I knew what access compromises I was making (I couldn't get into the garage through the side door - step - but I could through the garage door.)

    Congratulations!

I would contact the Center for Independent Living in the place you are moving to. The folks there should be prepared to offer you referrals to the local agencies that can help. You can contact a CIL in your area on this website: http://www.ilru.org/html/publications/directory/in...

Every college has a person or department that helps students with disabilities. I would call the school and see what referrals you might get from them. Best of luck!

on a similar time as i replaced into beginning as much as be up, my Dad had weapons interior the abode. long weapons quite often, yet some pistols too. He saved them locked in a gun cabinet in his learn, which replaced into easily factor of the hold close mattress room. I knew the area the main extreme replaced into, and confident, the temptation replaced into constantly there for me. yet my Father taught me approximately weapons at an rather early age. He took me to the selection with him and allowed me to hearth them below his close supervision. He additionally taught me what might want to take place if a gun went off "via accident". i did no longer "play" with my Fathers weapons for assorted reasons. First, through fact they have been HIS and He taught me to appreciate human beings's assets. 2d, through fact I knew what might want to take place if the gun misfired. And 0.33, through fact if my Dad had caught me doing so i does no longer have been able to sit down for a 300 and sixty 5 days, now to no longer point out having to undergo the disappointment in his eyes each time he recognised at me. A handgun is a device, ...a risky one, confident, yet a device besides the fact that that; no longer somewhat different from a hammer. while you're taking income of a handgun recklessly somebody is going to get injury. Swing a hammer with push aside for the safety of others around you and somebody gets injury as nicely. all of it boils actual right down to protecting the weapon in a threat-unfastened yet available place and education those on your greater suited 0.5 and toddlers that they do no longer look in as nicely shape or type a toy.

I wouldn't. I would go stay in a hotel and look for myself. It's a big expense and once the lease is signed you are locked in.
