Am I allergic to peanuts?

I just noticed that whenever I eat peanut butter my lips get numb.. Does this mean I have a slight allergy to peanuts? And if it is an allergy, will the reactions get more serious as time goes on?

It's possible that you are allergic to peanuts, or another ingredient of whatever you're eating it on (wheat or egg in the bread if you're eating a sandwich, etc). The best thing for you to do is go to an allergist and request a RAST or skin test. With the RAST test, you would have blood drawn and sent to a lab. With the skin test (this is much more common) the nurse would place a very small amount of pretein of various allergens on your arm or back and measure the reaction. If you are allergic it will turn red and itch a bit, and severity can be measured by the size of the red mark.

The good thig about food allergies that aren't too severe is that many people will eventually outgrow them, or can keep them under control with a daily allergy medication perscribed by an allergist.

As others said before me the best way to find out is to get a test done. Probably a good idea since if you are allergic it can get worse, yes you can get over them but Peanut allergies can get deadly bad.

reply to one above about you cant cause of how old you are Not True,,, you have to be introduced to things before you develop an allergy. Latex allergies come from people typically using it a lot like in the medical field with gloves.

The risk one day you could eat peanuts and not be able to breathe be careful hun

YES !! My daughter was diagnosed in december of 2003 when she was 14 months old. She is 7 1/2 and I have been dealing with this ever since.

Per her Allergist, EACH TIME you expose yourself to the allergen, your reaction time will get faster and faster (and worse)

My daughter carries an epi - pen. It is a self injector shot of epinephrine.

You very likely will go into anaphylactic shock.

You throat will swell shut (your airwa) and eventually your heart will stop.

If you are exposed to peanut/peanut butter, you should inject yourself with the epi pen and also take 2 Benedryl by mouth and call 911 immediately.

Epi Pens are prescription only. You need to get into see an allergist ASAP.

You also have to watch out for labels that say "manufactured on shared equiptment with products containing peanuts" AND 'may contain nuts'.

A 12 year old girl died here in Ohio at a local mall, she did not carry an epi pen. She ate a chicken sandwich so there must have been some cross contamination. She was shopping with her mother for a dress for a school dance. She did not come out of the dressing room and her mom went into see what was wrong. By the time she called 911 and they got there, the girl had died.

You should definitely stay away from anything that contains peanuts or peanut butter until you have an allergy test done. It may seem mild now but you never know when you will suddenly have a severe reaction and not have what you need on hand, like benadryl and epinephrine, it has happened before so be safe and call an allergist (or your doc to get a referral).
