Besides cost, should I get wood floors or laminate put in my house?

I have 2 dogs, one is a 40# puppy that runs through the house a lot, and I have a 7 yr old daughter that might get who knows what on the floor. I would need about 1000 sq ft that would include the den, dining areas, and formal living area. Any input from people with experience with these floors would be greatly appreciated!

Update:

I forgot, it will be in the kitchen also.

In your situation with dog and young child I'd consider vinyl planks rather than laminate for the areas that get the most use. I have it and consider it superior to cheap or average laminate for the price in terms of installation if you're DIYing, maintenance, ease of cleaning and water resistance. Last but not least, it's very easy to replace damaged pieces. Looks very much like wood or a better quality laminate. Home Depot has it. I have two large dogs and often we all come home with sand on our feet and the stuff has stood up very well. Sheet vinyl is a very good product too and excellent for kitchens but can be difficult to DIY. I wouldn't put any grade of laminate in a kitchen at all. It's too vulnerable to water damage. Dishwasher or fridge leaks one day, you have to replace at least part of your laminate floor which is not a simple job. Hardwood is fine anywhere except a kitchen as long as it's not too expensive for your budget and you're prepared to accept some wear and tear from dog claws. You don't have to put the same flooring everywhere. You might do hardwood in the formal living room and den, vinyl planks everywhere else.

My parents have both. Laminate seems to hold up much better and some of the finishes on a specific type of laminate has a warranty of many many years. You can tell laminate from real wood if you look closely, but the newer stuff is really nice and looks great. With a puppy you might want to look at the laminate with a guaranteed finish.

Laminate is what you need. There is an AC rating for laminate and I would get at least an AC3. I wouldn't put it in the kitchen.

Think this through , 2 dogs with 8 sets of dog claws, a kid who will scar whatever you put down as flooring!!

Have you considered tile or concrete????
