Another great Northern barrier broken-- which one will be next....?

Congrats to local Nashville product Blake Geoffrion on capturing the Hobey Baker award today.. Blake is the first player South of the Mason Dixon line to win the award.. His bloodline has ties to the northern U.S., but he is a genuine Southern raised , Non-traditional market guy that has eclipsed a huge milestone..

Which will be the next individual award to be won by a player from the Southern U.S.??

Update:

Myers nor Leetch were born AND spent their entire pre-collegiate/ league days in the Southern U.S... Nice references nonetheless.. Texas does seem to be the next logical place for a guy to come from that can excel in hockey..

Update 2:

LITY-- LOL-- Barry Trotz said that last sentence pretty much ver batum after him being drafted..

Tyler Myers, although he is technically Canadian, he was born in Texas and I think he qualifies as a southerner because they are a rarity in the NHL and he is the best one that comes to my mind.

Edit: I think Jason Zucker will win an award eventually or should I say has the potential to win an award and he will be drafted this summer and he is from Vegas he was only one of two 17 year olds on the USA CHAMPION! World Junior team.

  • Geoffrion's blood ties are to Quebec

His father, and grandfather were both born and raised in Montreal (the east side a few blocks south of me). I watched Blake's father tons of times, and his grandfather hundreds of times.

Of course, Nashville is hoping that Blake is closer in talent to his grandfather and great grandfather than his father!

Copas - his dad wasn't very good...he was one of those infamous players that could play Quebec style hockey, but once he was out of the Quebec League, he was like a fish out of water. I wish I had seen Blake's great grandfather play, although he probably would have been retired by the time I was born anyway.

Copas - you are aware that Blake Geoffrion played 4 years of high school hockey in Indiana at the Culver Military Academy (no different than Leetch - Myers moved to Canada when he was 6, makes him practically 'Canadian'!)

our az boys are holding their own. 3 were drafted by the nhl last year. luke moffat local az product is in the u18's development program for the u.s trying to help them repeat a gold.

david spina born in illinois spent his entire youth hockey here in phoenix and is on our ahl team. he would of been with the coyotes this year had he not had a torn pec muscle in one of our preseason games sidelining him for 4 months.

were going to see ALOT of kids coming from az, texas and california in the future. whether northerners want to admit it or not all 3 of our states have excellent youth programs, especially because we hae alot of former nhl'ers who retired, coaching here.
