One reason is because the smaller size causes the cell to have a higher surface area to volume ratio. This enables the cell to absorb enough nutrients and oxygen through the cell membrane to power the organism. There is an upper limit to the size of an organism beyond which it could not function in this way.

Because the smaller the cells are the lesser the weight. So the power required to drive the cells or move them in vehicles is less. So overall efficiency of the cells increase.

Less surface area for the cell means that more cells can create a bigger surface area for bodies. Less to repair.
