What is Athiesm Really...?

Athiesm is not believing in a deity or a god or any religion, right? Please correct me if I am wrong.

But I notice that atheists devote all their resources trying to disprove God. Why so much effort? Why then do you study the bible (lots of you all do)?; just to arm yourself for an argument perhaps?

-It seems like it is more of an anti-Christianity thing rather than anything else.

I also observe that you don't attack any other religion, belief or faith (or deity). I am so curious... appreciate the answers...

Actually, just finished a chapter on another book I'm writing on faith, including this very study. Atheism is the belief that there is no divinity or super natural being or force that is responsible for the creation, events in or destiny of life. If you've encountered atheists who are dedicated to attacking any religion, then they are more immoralists than atheists. I have a friend, a mentor in fact, who is atheist. He is kind and very knowledgable. He is aware that I'm a Christian but still respects me and offers me kind and wise words when he can.

Just because someone doesnt believe a deity or divinity exists doesn't mean that they are obligated to live without a sense of morals. Many in fact seek alternative ways of finding the morals and values that religious and spiritual individuals find in church.

Dont make the same mistake that others do friend. If they attack you because of their lack of faith, defend them with your strength in faith, not by yelling cussing screaming or shouting but by actually being the ideal follower of your faith. Be the example of the behavior taught in your faith, because in these times of re emergent (but often unrecognized) segregation, theres a need to avoid the practice versus preach phenominon.

    Excellent questions. Keep them coming!

    ----Correct.

But I notice that atheists devote all their resources trying to disprove God. Why so much effort?

Why then do you study the bible (lots of you all do)?; just to arm yourself for an argument perhaps?

----Actually, I try to live and let live. I respect others' choices in religion, so long as they respect mine. The reason I've recently started a bit of Bible study is because I'll be attending a Christian university in the fall and will be required to take the class "GSTR 310: Understandings of Christianity." While I do want to be able to defend my own beliefs, I'd like to be able to do so with a thorough understanding and sincere respect for the religion of my future classmates.

It seems like it is more of an anti-Christianity thing rather than anything else

----I think that that's probably because Christianity is the choice of the majority here in the US of A. I mean, if a group of people chooses to have chocolate ice cream at a party, what would be the point in a girl trying to tell them she did not want strawberry ice cream?

I also observe that you don't attack any other religion, belief or faith (or deity). I am so curious... appreciate the answers...

----I have not attacked any religion, belief, faith, or deity (except perhaps FSM and IPU).

Old habits die hard in this world. People have been trying to disprove Yahweh/Jesus/God since the Bible times. No surprise that now people are still doing it. Christianity is the truth, and the world has always hated the truth of God, so whether or not they actually believe its true, Christianity will always be attacked because of what it is. Remember, unlike pretty much all religions, its probably the only one that teaches faith above good works, and that Jesus is THE ONLY way to Heaven. The world is going to always hate that, because it leaves no wiggle room, and hey, it seems people think its more fun to attempt to pay the way when the full price to Heaven and freedom from Hell has already been paid for them if they just believed in Jesus as the way. I guess even atheists would find that one annoying.

Yes, you are right in regards to what atheism is: it's a lack of a belief in ANY deity. However, where you're wrong is that we, in general, are not anti-anything. Christianity is the largest religion in the world so it would be obvious that most of our discussions would be on Christianity. Second would be Islam. And, I tell you what.. I have more respect for Islam than I do Christianity as it's more consistent in its doctrine and its beliefs amongst followers. I do realize there are two major factions of the Muslims (Shia and Sunni) and that their beliefs lie in who was the rightful leader after Muhammad's death. Christianity has all sorts of wrong when it comes to their factions and beliefs. It's just a jumble of nonsense. These two religions are the main focus. The other religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, etc etc), while I'm familiar with them, I have no problems with them as they do not affect my life in regards to laws and regulations passed by my government.

Just because I say this doesn't mean I hate Christianity. It is wrong in my eyes but I do not look down upon those who belief in it. It seems you're trying to set up a strawman for argument's sake.

You are correct that atheism is not believing in a god.

Of course, not all atheists attempt to disprove god. Some simply disbelieve. Those who do attempt it are likely bothered by the atrocities committed in the name of a religion or god.

Some atheists are former theists, so having studied the Bible is probably due to that. Though, I imagine several atheists have read it to be informed about what they're arguing against.

Not all atheists are anti-theists (or anti-Christianity, specifically). The idea that Christianity receives the most scrutiny is probably because it is a dominant religion whose members proselytize so ardently.

i do no longer understand all of the exclamation !!!!! marks interior the question AND interior the 1st few solutions. Logically, a loss of concept in some thing (something in any respect) has no foundation for this joyful devotion. i don't have faith in FOUL LANGUAGE!!!! Yippee!!!! See? It is senseless. Magley's answer is the form of reaction i could anticipate, and countless different solutions after that. i'm no longer atheist (is that a double unfavorable? LOL) yet regularly I easily have got here across fairly some vivid, truthful human beings on the A-team. It takes braveness and documents to realize the atheist determination, gotta appreciate that.

  • I was a Christian for 20 years starting at age 10. (If you can call someone at that age a Christian) It wasn't really a one point that suddenly made me an Atheist. It was after years of careful study of religion and their arguments for their beliefs. I was planning on becoming a biblical scholar. I thought it would be interesting to see the Christian defenses for why they think its true and the defense for why people think it isn't true. The Christian arguments didn't hold any water and the Atheist arguments made a lot of sense. After that I looked at other religions and the non-believer arguments always made more sense. So I consider me an Atheist on every religion that I have studied so far.

I mainly talk about Christianity because it is the most prominent religion trying to push its beliefs on others where I live.

Atheism is the lack of belief in any deities. It is NOT the lack of belief in religion(s). (See Buddhism). I devote SOME time to try to educate people, especially in the realm of science. It seems many religious people's education system failed them miserably as they do not even have a basic 7th-8th grade education. People of other religions rarely speak up here. And they rarely try to convert( Muslims try to convert the most behind Christians) anyone. However, if another religion wants to present an argument that is faulty, i do point out the fault to them as well.

I've been studying religion since I was six, just because it was like fairy tales to me. As I got older, I realized how bloody and awful a lot of religious texts were, but I also see it in a purely detached way.

I honestly believe a lot of people on here are just being jerks, and other then a few jokes to my friends, I don't think anybody should insult religion.

We voice our disagreements to any religion. It just so happens that most of the questions on Y!A:R&S are posed by Christians and atheists. When Muslims, Jews or Wiccans post questions, we answer every bit as honestly.

We also live in societies where Christians are in the majority, so it's not surprising that we clash with Christians more often. It makes no more sense to be surprised at that than it does to be surprised at finding Jews in Israel.
