Do any companies still produce automatic weapons in the US?
From my understanding automatic weapons can no longer be imported, but can they be made in country? Do any companies even make them? How much would one cost. I am not some fanatic that wants to kill people, I simply want to the answer to this question. I just happen to be a person who enjoys guns who has no intention of shooting at anything other than a paper target! Thanks for your help guys! And please, no political/Anti-American crap.

They are still made here for our military. The only ones civilians can buy are the ones that were registered prior to 1986. Which means the number is fairly constant, and prices continue to go up. This does nothing to stop crime, of course, just adds to the elitist culture of the rich and politically-influential. A typical M16 from the Vietnam era sells for about $20,000.

yes. only available to LE and military. America is still the world's largest gun exporter.
you may also get a new dealer-sample automatic weapon. I do not know much about dealer-sample machine guns, besides they're the only exception the 1986 ban.
its best to buy a pre-86 machine gun than attempt to do anything else. you'll need ATF approval of your ATF form 4 to purchase the gun,. the process is rather complex. best ask either an online gun dealer that sells FAs (full autos) or the ATF on how you do that properly. Guns cost anywhere from $5000 to over $300,000.
you need to also think about ammo if you plan to buy an FA weapon. Ammo costs are significantly amplified in FA weapons. what may take you all day in a semiauto can be blazed thru in a few minutes of fun.

Wow, so many misconceptions and false premises I don't know where to start. Well, I guess I have to try. First off, the framers of the Constitution were bright and inventive men. While the technology of their time did not support firearms of the sort we have today, they could certainly envision the advances that would be made. Next, the "defend myself from the government" argument is in fact quite valid. You need only look at Viet Nam, Iraq, and Afghanistan to realize the limitations of a modern army fighting insurgents. And remember that the US military isn't going to be in any great hurry to to fight their fellow citizens in their own land when those citizens are probably in the right to start with. And finally I challenge you to define what an "assault weapon" is. Oh never mind, I'll just tell you. There is no such thing. It is just a marketing term for whatever scary black gun some power hungry politician wants to demonize in order to appear to be doing something about "gun crime" when he comes up for reelection.

No, the US has to have Russia, Iraq, and Pakistan make our full auto firearms and they are issued to US military members as soon as they leave the US. Actually, full autos can not be manufactured or imported for civilian use, but they can be manufactured for the military and police. Any full auto that can be owned by a civilian must have been made and registered before sometime in 1986. New full auto AR-15 style rifles cost police departments around $1500 or less. The ones that can be owned by civilians and are at least 24 years old are in excess of $16,000. I know a guy that is licensed as a manufacturer and makes full auto firearms for the local police. It only requires a SOT and a letter from a police department that they want to look at a full auto from you to be licensed to manufacture full autos if you are licensed as a manufacturer.

There are several companies that produce them, but they are not available for sale to the general public. You would need to be in law enforcement (issued through the department) or have a class III dealer license to posess them. So, the answer is yes, but it doesnt matter because they were made post 86' ban. Automatic weapons made pre-ban are legal to own in most states with the proper permits/licensing.

Colt, FNH, Kongsberg Defense, and others produce full auto weaponry, as does Northrop Grumman Vermont.

yes companies make brand new full auto weapons...but as the only weapons that can be owned legally are those on the machinegun registry, AND as that registry was closed in 1986, these new full auto weapons can only be sold to:
1. military
2. police
3. another gun company who buys it for research.
