Why is it that when a "religious" person teaches their child their belief system it is brainwashing, but..?
But when a "non religious" person passes on their belief system (because they quite obviously do have one) to their children it is ok?
Eye of Mars: So is it then better to teach children to be ignorant? Should we not answer their questions? I have 2 kids, they ask a lot of questions... should I tell them nothing if spiritual issues become involved? What if they ask a spiritual issue? It is the job of a parent to teach their child.
LJR: You make many assumptions, with apparent animosity.
What you teach are your interpretations of the truth, why should I be denied those same rights?
Are you so arrogant as to think you know that everything you believe is 100% true? I wouldn't think so... so why then should we be forced to teach you interpretations over our own?
Reverend Shistain Brown:
But what do you base those morals on? They will change depending on your belief system. Should I teach my children your view of morality over my own? Would you want someone telling you what you must teach your children to be right and wrong? Why then do you want to do the same to me?
Reverend Shistain Brown: Of coarse you will consider this incoherent babbling... nontheless why would you expect a concept which by nature is not physical to have an adequate physical definition?

Everyone brainwashes, though some people are morally superior to others, depending on what they brainwash.
Or so I've been told.

Because your lying to children. What kind of non-religious beliefs are you refering to?
I thought parents just passed on values, knowledge, and morals.
edit: btw, "spiritual" is a nonsense term with a vague definition. i dare u to define it without rambling incoherently.
edit: Fine, teach your kids that morality comes from a bipolar god and his poorly written book about rape, genocide and slavery. I'm sure u haven't read it. It's wrong but you'll teach them it's a "moral guide" anyway.
If science doesn't know of your made up spiritual realm than I don't believe it. Regular people don't know more than those more hungry for the truth. Sorry.

A non-religious person teaches their children to look for facts and a religious person teaches their children to ignore facts. It's the difference between showing a child reality and teaching a child that fantasy is reality. One is teaching the other is indoctrination.
Edit--I didn't say a non-religious person was teaching truth. I said they were teaching their children to look for fact. Facts are undeniable they point in the direction of truth. As facts build up, truth becomes apparent. The more facts available the less speculative truth becomes. A religious person does things in reverse, starting with the assumption of truth and ignoring or discarding facts that point to a contrary definition.
There is no animosity in that statement. Religion simply is not based on fact it is based on faith. In order to have faith in something one must believe it is true. To believe a thing is true one must discard contrary evidence. Judging by the vast numbers of religious persons who reject science in favor of religious myth and who are able to ignore contradiction and absence of historicity it is obvious that religious people are extremely good at ignoring facts that contradict the truth of their faith.
If you are teaching your children to rely on faith not fact you are indoctrinating your children.
Indoctrination: the process of inculcating ideas, attitudes, and cognitive strategies. It is distinguished from education by the fact that the indoctrinated person is expected not to question or critically examine the doctrine they have learned.
This is exactly what religious people do. They indoctrinate their children.

Everyone, theist and non, uses science, either explicitly in their profession or implicitly in the technology we all employ.
Thus, your charge of a specific belief system only held by non-theists requires examples, not merely an assertion.

Because there's a huge difference between saying nothing about the subject of God, and saying "There is no God".
