if i gave away a dog i adopted from the humane society does that prevent me from adopting there in the future?

A few years ago i adopted a dog from the humane society. We already had one dog that belonged to my father. Well my parents got divorced and my fathers dog had passed away. I was about to go away to college so i let my dad have my dog. He has grown very attached to the dog and i no longer consider her mine. I have since graduated and my new Fiance and i are now looking for a pet. Am i still able to adopt from the humane society even tho i gave the last dog away? and if i tell them i gave the dog away will they take her from my father? She is in a very good home and very much loved.

You didn't give your dog away on craigslist or get rid of it for your own selfish reasons.

You gave it to your father out of love for him and the dog.

There is NOTHING wrong about what you did. I definetly would think they would let you adopt again.

Golden Retrievers are my favorite dogs. I've had three already and I haven't found anything wrong with them yet. To have the best golden I would make sure that they're AKC registered. The AKC registered ones don't have problems that the mutts. There are two different types of goldens; a golden golden, and a copper penny. A copper penny is more of a showy dog and I prefer them over a regular golden. They need lots of love and attention. They also make great hunting dogs and are very quiet and kind. They are great with kids. For a calmer golden I would get an adult puppies take lots of patience. Training takes time and my puppy use to be scared of everything and still has some fears. It'll take some time but the fears will fade. Try keeping treats on hand and reward when she isn't scared. Tell her it's all right

I would assume the dog was adopted in your parents name since you would had been a minor & unable to adopt if under 18 yrs. The dog is still technically in the family so I wouldn't mention it. Do know most shelters/rescues will not adopt to ppl who have given/dumped their pets before no matter how good the new home is now. It is a pattern of behavior & responsibility which they don't want the pets they place to be given away again.

Sure you can! Most students leave their pets with their parents when they go to college. It's all good :)

The only time you'd face a problem is if you had dropped off the dog at the SPCA. Most shelters will not adopt out to a person who has abandoned an animal to them.

Many humane societies/shelters will inquire about previous pets and what happened to them. I highly doubt that going away to college and giving the dog to your father will prevent you from adopting.

They could prevent another adoption if you gave him to another shelter. But since you didn't - then there should be no issue.

Just be really sure that you are now ready to settle down and care for a dog.

Yeah. The humane society can be total butts about this sort of thing. We WERE going to adopt from them, but nooooo. The boisterious lab pup that almost smothered me to death when I was 2 was given away to responsible owners (who I hear have been taking very good care of him), and they vetoed us because of it =/

I think you're fine. And honestly I don't consider her living with your father the same as "giving her away." It's not like you sold her or rehomed her to a non-relative or dropped her off at a shelter.

yeah, and plus its not like they look up how the dog is being, they wont even know u gave it away. the only thing they would look up from ur history is if u abused or neglected pets.

no the dog lives with your dad?

    that is perfectly fine

thanks for adopting from a shelter!!!
