breastfeeding after breast reduction surgery?

im 16 weeks and 6 dayys pregnant with my first,i had breast reduction surgery about 3 years ago for medical reasons, i always wanted to breastfeed, for many reasons, one of them being because its just genuinely better for the baby, anyways the doctor did cut off my nipple and cut it smaller ,but im not sure he did anything with my milk ducts,my ob told me i may not be able to just breastfeed because of my surgery, for the fact i may not produce alot of milk, but i was gonna both breast feed and formula feed if i had to, she said that was fine, starting at my 16 weeks i started lactating already, what i want to know is if there is anyone who had breast reduction surgery and didn't have any problems breastfeeding

plz be nice

thank you

Update:

no u misunderstood my doctor now,the one that is moitoring my pregnacy told i may not beable to breastfeed fully, my surgren 3 years ago never said anything and i was only 17 i never thought to ask him

If you have already started lactating then I am assuming you will have no problem.

From what little I have read, it seems that when the nipples are removed and then replaced it usually blocks off the connection to the milk ducts.

But, as I said, if milk is coming out then this is obviously not your problem.

I suggest you contact a lactation consultant or your local La Leche League for more information and support.

If you can, contact the dr who performed the surgery and see if you can get a copy of your records, then contact a lactation consultant to see if they have any advice. I've never had a reduction, but I had major supply issues anyway. I still breastfed, but i had to supplement. So even if you can't breastfeed 100% you can still give the baby all the milk you make. Good luck!

I had reduction surgery in December. I did a TON of research so I was a very informed patient going in. My doctor and his staff were also AMAZING at providing me with printed material explaining everything, and answering my questions.

Even with all that, though, I still wondered how the nipple is moved/re-positioned, etc. I was talking to my mom about it and looking for a diagram and found this:

FINALLY I understood how the nipple is moved, and how it is repositioned. It is not "cut off" like you said (and like I thought too).

I can't answer your questions about breast feeding, as I have no experience. I did want to drop you a line and give you that information about how the nipple is moved, though. It answered so many of my questions. I understood too why I was SO swollen and SO bruised. I hope you find it helpful too.

Okay, I had reduction surgery after my first baby. She was 9 months old, and I was up to a 48EE. Yes really!! Sucked!! I gave birth to my second baby 2 years later and was able to nurse him no problem! I had another baby 6 years later, still nursed, and one more 17months later...and yepper..still able to nurse. My surgery was 18 years ago, and now they have so, so, so many advancements, that I don't think you will have a problem, but ask your doctor for sure. Good Luck

well, if your doc told you that after surgery, he prob. destroyed your glands. all you can do is wait and see. there might be some things you can do in advance, so seek lactation support now.

well, at 17 your body is still growing so i think you might have a good chance. look into an herb called goat's rue and discuss that with your doc, it's supposed to actually help you make more mammary glands. there are also rx drugs that increase lactation. good luck!

don't worry, the breast is made mainly from milk glands so you will still have an abundance of them, your already lactating and quite early so I wouldn't worry about your supply. you should breastfeed fine, good luck :)
