Can I mix CZ with real diamonds?

Or would you be able to tell the CZ is fake if placed next to real diamonds?

My father suggested we just buy the setting for our engagement ring and put a CZ in it for now and then save up for the diamond later to swap out, as that makes the ring we want much easier for us to pay for. But since the setting comes with the diamond side stones in it already, will it be obvious that the CZ is fake next to the side stones?

Update:

For the record, I expect we'd only have the CZ in for 6 months to a year. After that we'd replace it with a diamond or a sapphire or something. This would be a very temporary solution. We can afford the ring now but it'd make a dent in our savings that I'd rather split up and spread out a bit.

No. If anything, it will look loads better than any diamond that you could afford now. ((A high-grade CZ has the exact characteristics as a D-IF diamond, and if bought from a good company, are hand-cut to the most ideal standards as any diamond)). Plus, they are a beautiful stone in their own right.

If you choose to replace the stone later, that's your choice entirely... but, no, nobody will be able to tell the difference, as long as it is a high quality and well-cut CZ.

I disagree with the first poster. I know many jewelers who admit that it is very difficult to know the difference between a CZ and real diamond. I would definitely go ahead and get the CZ center stone put in until you can afford the actual diamond or colored stone you really want. Its a smart decision on your behalf. If the side stones aren't big or anything then it will look fine. When you go to a jewelry store and look at diamond rings, a lot of them have CZ center stones in them for precautionary reasons. Some of the settings the CZ's are sitting in have diamond bands, and I don't think there is a visible difference. I'd go to a jewelry store and check it out for yourself and you'll see what I'm talking about.

A friend of mine did this very thing! The ring had smaller accent diamonds surrounding a bigger CZ, which they decided they would replace with a diamond for their first anniversary. Even if people do notice the difference (and I don't think I would!), does it really matter? You don't need to discuss your financial situation with everyone who looks at your ring.

Plenty of people talk about trading their rings in for bigger, better diamonds. This way you get to keep the ring he proposed with, and get the diamond you want when you can afford it.

Unfortunately, yes. CZ will not stand up to wear and tear well and when it is next to a diamond it will look especially fake very soon. Have you ever considered MOissanite? It is a man made stone that is second in hardness only to diamonds and it is actually more brilliant than a diamond. It usually comes with a lifetime guarantee to never lose its brilliance as well. You can find Moissanite at a lot of jewelers these days. http://store.jewelryninja.com/store/Search.aspx?se... Congratulations and good luck!
