How do you make a shotgun plug?

I just bought a new remington 870 with an 8 round capacity. it didn't come with a plug, which sucks because I got it for piggin'. i'm not talking about something in a pinch, i want something that's gonna feel right inside of MY firearm. i've heard something about dowels, but what size is best and how do you do it?

Update:

thanks for the quick response moosey.

get a dowel thats able to fit inside the magazine spring, or, about a 1/2 inch. its idiot proof, just estimate the length of five shells and cut the rod. disassemble the gun as you would for cleaning, when you reassemble, put the dowel behind the magazine follower (the thing that pushes the shells). As long as you cant fit more than 3 shells in the tube, youre good to go. If more than two fit, the dowel is too short so get another and make it longer. If they wont fit, trim some more off. Its not a precision thing.

Source(s): ADDED: my old ithaca 37 came stock from the factory with a wooden dowel. It was stamped 'ITHACA GUN CO." with a short warning about migratory bird laws.

Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy a 1/2 inch wooden dowel (or as close as you can get to the diameter of a shotgun shell. Cut it to the length of five shotgun shells to reduce capacity to three rounds if you can hold seven in the magazine and one in the barrel.

Be careful. You must not be able to load more than two shells in the magazine if you have one shell in the barrel. That is the bird hunting law in my state.

You will need to put the plug in the proper place. On my Browning shotgun I unscrew the barrel retainer cap and put it between the magazine spring and the cap. You probably knew that but others may not have.

it is not. a plug is a slender rod that fits inside the area below the barrel where extra rounds are stored. depending on your model of shotgun, you can often use any stick, around pencil size to limit how many shells you can put in the magazine tube. unscrewing the barrel from the end of the magazine tube will allow the barrel to be removed, and with most guns you can just drop a stick in the threaded hole. best to google your gun though, as some have springs that will pop out while attempting this.

I've had a #2 pencil in my Mossberg pump 12gauge for over 28 years and have never had a problem. You can also use a dowel or anything else that will fit in there.

A wooden dowel, a pencil, a twig even works if the game warden is on your @$$. Everything works if it is the right size in diameter and length
