one of my cats keeps deficating outside the litter box?

Recently(less than 4 months ago) my father passed away... his declawed cat Perkins.. (we assume) keeps defecating on the rug just inside the door.. we reintroduced a cat she lived with for several years (Elsy).. and that seemed to be okay for several weeks.. but then we brought home a new baby kitty (Erlich) about a month ago... after about a 3 weeks... we noticed turds on the rug.. which seemed to be too big to be erlichs.. and elsy seems to be dealing with him nicely ... sleeps with him, plays etc... but perkins growls at erlich even after.... 2 months or so now... most of the turds seem to be her size... but now some seem to be from him.... (small, watery) ... i know she's dealing with the loss of her daddy(my daddy) who gave her more attention than i can give her( he was retired, but every moment i have at home i pet her and brush her) what can i do? I try to give her preeminent jurisdiction over my time.. but apparently it isnt enough

Update:

errr 3 months ago we reintroduced elsy... just about 2 or 3 days after i found out about my fathers death

Sorry to hear about your dad's passing. Cats aren't as easy to understand as dogs (at least for me!!).

I had a similar problem years ago when i ended up with 3 cats at one time. The problem was solved when I put out another litter box. So in the end i had 2 different litter boxes, and one cat 'claimed' one, and the other 2 used the other one. Another problem could be the cleanliness. They only like to poo in clean places, and if there are now 3 cats, that means cleaning the litter box everyday or even to the extent of every time they use it. Some cats are VERY picky!!

Also, have you changed brands of litter? sometimes they don't like the smell of certain litters.

one last thing could be, possibly, but i doubt it, the dreaded worms... have you dewormed them lately? disgusting i know, but even more disgusting if not done regularly! eww..

    Good luck!

Maybe he doesn't like sharing the litter box. Some people have to have seperate litter boxes for each cat. I would get another box and maybe buy some litter that is supposed to attract cats to use it - find it at the pet store. The kitten may be curious and playful when the older one is using the box, or maybe he feels vulnerable stuck inside there with other cats around, particularly a playful kitten. So maybe get him a box without a lid and put it somewhere else. I would show him where it is, and hopefully he will feel comfortable using it. He may also be fastidious and really like a clean box - if I am late cleaning my cat's box he will defecate nearby.
