Cat throwing up about one a week?

We adopted a cat who we assume was a stray in October. During the past month or so...it seems like once a week or once every othe week she is throwing up. She only throws up once. It is thick like food most times...but today it was clear and watery. Not really yellow like bile..but a little thicker than water. She makes no sound before but just does her thing and walks away.

She is still eating normally and sleeping/playing. Any ideas?

THANKS alot...I lover her. Oh and we have another cat who never throws up.

Update:

Do you agree with the first answer? We are not sure she was spayed...but the vet said when she went into heat WE would know it. We did want to get her spayed if she wasn't. The vet couldn't tell us if she was or not.

Update 2:

THANKS Kia!

Update 3:

Thanks everyone and we do use Iams...the orginial formula. I was going to get the hairball Iams...but someone just said it may make things worse.

THANKS ALL

My cat use to throw up more often than once a week. Sometimes it would be watery and thick but for the most part it looked like food. So we started trying new foods we tried all the sensitive systems food. We ended up going with IAMS. He still throws up maybe once a month or 2 but I think that happens only bc he eats too much then plays hard. I would try changing her food. Check out IAMS here is a link:

    http://www.iams.com/iams/en_US/jsp/IAMS_Page.jsp?p...

Also I found that the hairball control foods only made him worse (guessing she is an indoor cat) so I quit giving him those he does much better now. We never change is food he eats the IAMS all the time like I said he does still throw up be not like he did. Hope this helps!!

If your vet can't tell if she was spayed, then you need a new vet. You would have probably noticed signs of heat if she was not spayed tho, so if you haven't noticed anything I would bet she is fixed. As for the vomiting, is it a hairball? Does it look like a log that is close to the color of her fur? If so, its pretty common for cats to get hairballs. A few things you can try: Put a little Vaseline or petromalt (spelling?) on her paw and let her lick it off. It will help the hairball pass out the other end. Also, make sure she is on a good diet of wet food every day. This will help her coat be more moisturized and will lead to less shedding, which will in turn lead to less fur being licked off when she is cleaning herself. Make sure to brush her often, especially if she is long haired. This time of year she will be shedding more and more and it will only make a hairball problem worse.

If its food she is vomiting up, she could have a mild food allergy which you would want to be diagnosed by your vet so you know what to avoid in the future. It sounds just like normal hairballs to me tho, so I am thinking she is ok and just needs a little help "passing" the obstructions. I'll check back to your question to see if you have updated any info.

First, don't let your cat lick vaseline as someone suggested. Never give your cats medicine or human medicine unless directed by your vet. Your vet will probably suggest using laxetone, from your veterinary office, if they think it's hairballs.

Second, there are tons of reason why you SHOULD get your cat spayed. First, the heat cycles are uncomfortable for the cat. Second, it will help in the long run if your cat should need surgery for another reason. Being in heat complicates a surgery because of the excess bleeding. Unspayed females can also develop mammarian cancer later on in life. Third, if your cat gets out and gets pregnant, you've now added to the problem of too many cats and not enough homes for them.

Third, if your vet can't tell if your cat is spayed, then he's an idiot. All they have to do is check for the incision.

If your cat is throwing up once a week but is fine otherwise, take the cat to the vet. If your vet is on the level, they'll suggest some prescription food that is more sensitive on their stomachs and a dose of laxetone once or twice a day.

I wouldn't worry about it if it is only once every week or two. Some cats are just kind of "pukey". Some eat too fast. I've never heard horny, but I've never had a female cat. I currently have cat that frequently vomits, and I have been working with his vet. My vet said she is not concerned if it is once a week. If you notice she is losing weight, or becomes lethargic (glad she is playing lots!), I would take her in. You can also ask your vet their opinion on the frequency of throwing up, and if once a week is a problem.

BTW, can't the vet shave her stomach to look for scars to see if she had been spayed? You are right to want to make sure she is. I had a friend that adopted a stray. When she took her in to get spayed, just as the vet was about to start, he saw the scars and stopped the procedure. Just a thought...

Hope everything is fine with your kitty!
