The Boys name "Jan" ...?

Hello!

The boys name "Jan" was incredibly popular in Norway a while back, from 1940-1973 it was the most used name in Norway for baby boys, and in the year preceding and following this period the name was in the top10.

Jan is pronunced Yaan (Long A sound) or Yahn, and it's a danish version of the name John.

What do you think of the name? Would you use it? Do you prefer Jan or John?

I actually know a guy named Jan. I personally don't think it is a very masculine name for a boy. I would say go with John, I like the name John Henry. :)

Well, I live in the US so I definitely prefer John. Jan would just be nothing but problems because everyone would pronounce it the way it looks and then they'd probably think it was a girl's name b/c Jan definitely looks and feminine if you are thinking it's pronounced the way it looks.

Same here, my mum's name is Janice, she hates it so everybody calls her Jan. It is popular in some countries though so i see what you mean, but on my advice i would go with John and not use Jan as not to confuse people whether its a boy or a girl :)

    Hope i helped!

  • I wouldn't use it since my mother's name is Janice so that's what seeing Jan reminds me of. I prefer John to Jan for a boy.

I prefer the anglicized spellings Yaan & Yann. Jan looks too much like the girl's name to me. I think it's pretty cute, I definitely prefer it to John.

it would be pronounced as its spelled here in the states, and is also a feminine name here as well, so i wouldnt, only because my husbands name is tracy and he hates it. he was teased all of the time for having a girls name and even today people still say they think when they see our names in the phone book they thought we were lesbians. Id go with John

I have a friend called Jan, and people make fun of him, calling him Janet and Jam, etc, but that's in the UK, I'm not quite sure where you are.
