  • For those of you who like "unisex" names ..?

A question for those of you who like "unisex" names on girls:

Why do you think it's okay to give a traditionally masculine name - such as Madison, Addison, Riley, Avery etc - to a girl, but not give a traditionally feminine name - like Elizabeth or Charlotte - to a boy?

Just curious, I don't get it myself.

  • Which two do you prefer together?

    BEFORE ANSWERING, READ THIS:

Where I live, in the UK, Harper is seen as a masculine/boys name. Regardless of whether it is feminine where you live, it isn't where I am so any answers saying "omigosh Harper's so girly he'd egt bullied!!!1!" will just be TD'd. Please try to take this into account when answering. Thank you :)

Also, I am not looking for opinions on Elias, or any of the middle names, or the fact that there are two middle names. Please just stick to Harper and Jasper!

Now, I want to know which of these potential sibsets you prefer:

    1.

    Harper Nathaniel Grey

    & Elias Finley Jasper

    2. Jasper Nathaniel Grey

    & Elias Finley Harper

    [Elias is ee-LY-us]

I'm tied between Harper and Jasper for first place on my list, and I can't choose between them! If I choose Harper as my #1, Jasper has to be ruled out as a first name because they're way too similar for brothers unfortunately :( Likewise, if I choose Jasper as my #1, Harper must be ruled out as a first name.

Please, if you can, explain why you chose the set you did. "Harper is too girly" will not be considered a valid reason. The more of an explanation you give, the higher your chance of getting BA.

    Thanks :)

  • What are your thoughts on the name ♀ GEMMA?

    Gemma

    → ♀

    → [JEM-ə]

    → Italian, meaning "gemstone"

The name has grown on my a lot in the past month or two. Admittedly, this is probably due to my recent interest in model Gemma Ward. SO likes it too, though not as much as me. If I add it to my list, it will be as a middle name because I alread have Jennifer (nn Jenna) on there as a first name, and Gemma is too similar to Jenna. Either that, or it will replace Jennifer.

What are your honest opinions on it? Be as harsh as you like :)

NB: I don't care for the spelling Jemma much, or the name Emma.

  • What do you think of the names ♂ BOSTON and ♀ FLORENCE?

    Boston

    → male

    → a place name

    Florence

    → female

    → meaning "prosperous, flourishing"

What do you think of both of them? SO and I are thinking of adding them to our lists, most probably as middle names.

  • Can you pair up these names for twins ♀♂?

Just for fun, how would you pair up my favourite names for boy-girl twins :) Use each name only ONCE; you should have 8 different pairs at the end.

    ♂♂♂

    Roman [RO-mun]

    Harper **

    Morgan **

    Elias [ee-LY-us]

    River

    Gideon

    Isaac

    Aubrey **

    Nathaniel

    ♀♀♀

    Viola [vy-OH-luh]

    Isobel

    Eleanor

    Matilda

    Jennifer

    Francesca

    Katherine

    Winter

    Annabel

Please explain why you chose each pair, if you can :)

** Yes, these are BOYS names, and I live in England where these names are rarely seen on girls, if ever.

  • What do you think of the ♀ name Isla Madeleine?

    → Isla Madeleine

    → ♀

    → pronounced [EYE-luh] [MAD-uh-lane]

→ Isla is a variant form of the masculine name Islay, a Scottish island. Madeleine means "woman from Magdala".

→ On the UK top 100 list for 2009, Isla is ranked 30 (1908 girls were given the name), and Madeleine is unranked.

This name combination was in my dream last night and has been in my head all day, just wondering what everyone thinks of it. It won't ever go on my list, as I already have Viola and Isobel as my top 2 girls names and they're too similar to Isla. But otherwise, I do adore it.

Also, as someone who lived in France for a year, I know Madeleine is more traditionally pronounced [mad-uh-LEN] and this is usually my preferred pronunciation, but it was being said the [MAD-uh-lane] way in the dream.

  • ♀ What are some names with a similar "feel" to ALICE?

Can you please suggest some names that a similar "feel" to the girls name Alice :)

By "feel", I mean names which are perhaps 'cute' like Alice, 'classic' like Alice etc.

I don't want names that SOUND like Alice, eg. Alyssa, Aline, Alia etc.

    Thanks ♥

  • What do you think of BLUBELL as a girls name?

**NOTE: I am NOT pregnant, and will not be looking to start a family for a least another few years. Also, PLEASE read the whole Q before answering, thanks :)

A very long time ago, I had Blue as a middle name for a girl on my own favourites list. I discarded it soon enough though, because it seemed a little too trendy for my tastes. But I do still like the sound and look of the name, and talking about it with my SO earlier I discovered that he really likes it too. We still thought it sounded a bit trendy, but then we came up with Bluebell which seems to fit into our list so nicely as there are a lot of other flower/nature names on it.

This is our list at the moment:

-- Viola Hazel Blair (nn Ivy)

-- Isobel Daphne Grace (nn Bel)

-- Rose Ivy Caroline [or possibly Primrose Ivy Caroline]

    -- Olive Ruby Winter

    **

-- Molly Eleanor June [or possibly Mary Eleanor June “Molly”]

-- Catherine Alice May (nn Kitty)

-- Emmeline Anna Lily (nn Emme)

We’re looking to slot Bluebell in where the asterisks are, between Olive and Molly. We’re thinking, for combinations, possibly Bluebell Regina Lucy, Bluebell Mary Isla, Bluebell Ottilie Clara or Bluebell Amélie Eve. We’re open to suggestions though!

Blue would definitely be used as a nickname, and Bluebell would NEVER be used in a sibset with Isobel.

Mainly, we’re just looking for your thoughts on Bluebell as a name. Do you think it’s too frilly or pretentious? Bearing in mind that we live in London, England, where names such as this are more openly used – for use of Bluebell, see the birth announcements here: http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/births/announ...

Also, what are your thoughts on the spelling? Our preferred spelling is Bluebel, but as this isn’t the name of the actual flower we’re worried it might cause problems.

  • What are your thoughts on my revised favourites (GIRLS)?

My SO used to be convinced that I could pick the names for our children and he wasn't bothered about them, but now he's decided he is interested and wants a say! So we spent most of the morning devising some first-middle-middle combinations that we both like, and I'm wondering what your thoughts on them are :)

These are the girl names. Check the additional details for the boy name question if you please :)

    •• Viola Hazel Blair

Viola is "vy-OH-luh", not "vee-OH-luh". Do you think Violet would be nicer here?

    •• Isobel Daphne Grace

Originally had it with Daphne as the first, but we really prefer it in the middle. Is there any one/two syllable name that would sound better than Grace here?

    •• Olive Ruby Winter

Is it a problem that these are all word/nature names? It wasn't intentionally, but I did notice it and I don't want the name to sound cheesy. Also, would Olive sound bad in a sibset with Viola because they both have the V sound?

    •• Rose Ivy Catherine

Rose Ivy Catherine or Rose Ivy Caroline - which do you prefer? We were also considering Ivy as a first name, but we're worried it's too similar to Viola? This would NOT be used in a sibset with Roman "Rome" at all.

    •• Mary Elizabeth June

Mary/Molly is Nate's late grandmother's name, Elizabeth would be after my mother Elle. Nate likes Molly on its own but I don't think it would age well. But then, I think Mary (although the "proper" first name for the nickname Molly) is just a little too plain for our tastes. We're also considering Maren "MAIR-uhn" or Pomeline "pom-eh-LEEN" / "POM-eh-line" as the first name, with the nickname Molly. What do you think of these, and do you have any other suggestions?

Please answer the comment on the questions I’ve asked, and provide your general thoughts on each name. If you don’t have much time to spare, feel free to just rate or tell me your favourites / least favourites. But the 10 points will go to the most detailed answer!

Don't be afraid to be honest, even brutally so! We're still not 100% set on them, and it will probably be a long time before children are really on the cards for us.

    Thanks!

    ~ Aurora

NOTE: Though the flow may sound a little “off” on some of them, my SO and I think they sound perfectly lovely with the surname. Also, if you’re going to make a point about how they’d sound in a sibsets then please note that we’re looking to have just one or two children, with three at the absolute most.

So we spent most of the morning devising some first-middle-middle combinations that we both like, and I'm wondering what your thoughts on them are :)

These are the boy names. Check the additional details for the girl name question if you please :)

    •• Roman Nathaniel Grey

Roman is "RO-muhn", not "ro-MAHN". Nathaniel is after my SO; we originally wanted it as a first name but now he's not too keen on sharing a name with his son, as he also shares it with his dad. Grey is to honour my maiden name.

    •• Harper Adam Jack

Do you think Jack makes the combination a little too harsh? We’re open to suggestions with that, and aren’t too attached to Adam so you can suggest alternatives to that too.

    •• Morgan Bennet James

I live in England, where Harper and Morgan are pretty much strictly boys names. So that shouldn't be a problem.

    •• Isaac Jasper Gabriel

we're not all that keen on the middles together, though we love them separately. Any ideas for middle names for Isaac including either Jasper OR Gabriel?

    •• Maxwell Jacob Heath

We're also considering Maximilien in place of Maxwell, what would your thoughts on that be?

Please answer the comment on the questions I’ve asked, and provide your general thoughts on each name. If you don’t have much time to spare, feel free to just rate or tell me your favourites / least favourites. But the 10 points will go to the most detailed answer!

    • Viola & Isaac

    • Viola & Olive

    • Mary (Molly) & Maxwell

    • Mary (Molly) & Morgan

    • Mary (Molly) & Daphne

I'm looking for some names, for girls and boys, which end in the "ee" sound - 'ie', 'ee', 'ey' etc.

Examples of names I'm looking for: Chelsea, Rosalie, Henry, Darcey, Kaylee etc.

I'm NOT looking for a nickname sort of name, like: Ellie, Charley, Freddie etc. so please keep those to an absolute minimum.
