Yes but its extremely difficult to do nowadays. Because there are so many trade schools pumping out medical assistants by the truckload. My advice would be to return to school for something else but if you really want find work as a medical assistant your best bet is to volunteer at an office. Most of the jobs want you to have 1 to 2 years work experience. Also adding some certifications on to your certificate will help. Become certified or registered, get a phlebotomy cert., also get medical office assistant certification.

Medical coding is actually a field that is becoming more in demand because of the federal mandate for health care facilities across the US to go to electronic medical record systems. Before making a decision check out some of the hospital websites in the areas where you are considering and see what is available. Your best bet with little experience will be going to work in a hospital or HMO facility and you can then take classes at your own pace to move up.

A medical career is always worth considering, from nurses and consultants right down to hospital cleaning crews. The site in the box below has some fantastic guidance on entering this noble industry. My brother got some fantastic guidance from there prior to landing a career as a medical admin assistant.

Of course, you can still get a job as a cma regardless if it was a year ago. As long as your certifications are still valid, everything is fine! If not, you need to take a continuing education class. These CEU's are essential if you wish to keep and maintain your certification as a medical assistant. Goodluck on finding a job!
