Theater or Theatre? Do the different spellings mean anything?

I've been on stage in many places in the USA that used one or the other spelling. Nobody I've asked seems to know if there's any different meanings between the spellings.

Theatre is often the concept. Theater is the actual place.

There's Theatre in a Theater, for example.

    Hardly set in stone though.

Theatre is not 'old English" it is English as in the UK and it is the traditional spelling, However, the newspaper's handbook of spelling for the US says Theater is correct. So publicity needs to be 'theater' unless it is in the name of the place or organization and they still might change it. But feel free to use 'theatre' whenever you like. They are interchangeable except in the newspaper. LOL>

The both mean the exact same thing. Either one is acceptable. Theatre is more of an English version, like favourite instead of favorite, while theater is more American.

They both mean the same thing. My theater teacher said that THEATRE is more old english and THEATER is just more modern spelling. Hope this helps:)
