Building an AR-15: Free Float hand guard?
I'm building an AR-15 and i was wondering is it really necessary to have a free float hand guard?I know that a non free float hand guard can cause some accuracy problems but I'm mainly gonna be using if for plinking and home defense not any competition shooting or hunting. So is it really worth the extra money to get a free float hand guard or can i get by with a standard two piece?

Two reasons for a free float rail.
1. Long range shooting where the rest/bipod/or sling may affect the shot by pushing the barrel slightly.
2. Mounting additional optics in front of the flat top section on the upper receiver. Any optic mount needs to have zero play for obvious reasons.
Sounds like you don't need one for your stated purpose...of course, once you have said rifle, your use may change...

For the increased accuracy and the solid feel I think its worth the difference. I put these Samson Star-C Free Float's on my AR Carbines, they work great and look better than the drop in's if you ask me. I get compliments on them every time I take one to a range.

rather of using a conventional barrel nut, you employ a definite barrel nut which may be particular for that unfastened decide on the flow hand shield. some have set screws that lock the hand shield to the barrel nut. Others advise using a Lock-Tite product to hold the hand shield and save it from rotating. they do no longer look to be everlasting and can be bumped off. some require a definite gadget to tighten them. no rely if that's a actual AR-15 top, the unfastened decide on the flow tube will extra wholesome.

No. It does help with accuracy but not to a degree a casual shooter will notice. It's more of a braggin rights thing.
